stihl 066
« on: February 07, 2012, 06:47:36 pm »
Have a stihl 066 that will not start,120 lbs. comp. has good spark, cleaned and put carb. kit in.It really has me stumped, gas in the cylinder isn't even getting it to try and start.Never had one do this. Was wondering if it could be a timing issue and how to check it.Any help greatly appreciated.

Do you know if the saw ran in the past with the existing coil\flywheel? Stihl made a a bunch of different combo's where the coil\flywheel have to match. Also 120 lbs is very low. It needs new rings for sure.

Take the muffler off and look at the piston. You may have a stuck ring which will give you low compression.

Just WAG here. Take the plug out and pull over and over to unflood. Put good dry plug in. Use squirt bottle like squirt oiler bottle and squirt some mix through carb into cylinder area with throttle trigger pulled. Now make sure you on/off switch is working before hand and try and start or get it to fire off.

I'm thinking maybe carb kit is installed in wrong order or fulcrum setting wrong or something to that.

I sent a 036 back out the other day with a guy with 120psi and it needs re-ringed or piston kit but it is still cutting good with a carb tuned up.

Well if you get the spacer gasket on the wrong side of the diaphragm it won't go fer luv ner money .You might get it to putt with a dry plug but then you'd  better keep the throttle wide open  else it will flood in a Mississippi second .

Embarrising as it is I did that to an 042 Stihl once the had me so mad I banished it to be a shelf queen .Took me two years to get over my pout .

Seriously though without seeing it I'd suspect the carb for whatever reason is the problem .If every thing is not in the correct assembley location it just plain  won't go .Obviously if it won't even fart on a prime it's flooding itself .
