Stihl 070 090
« on: August 11, 2011, 09:51:39 pm »
I did not see a thread for the 070/090 chainsaws, so I thought I would start one about the 070 I got running today.

I got this saw from a buddy as payment for getting another saw running. Had to clean the points, repair the kill switch and adjust the carb to get it up and running again. Now I have to find myself a long piece of 1/2" pitch chain for the bow bar that came with the saw. I would also like to replace that patched up plug wire at some point.

Bill G had a guy that would make an adaptor to take rim drive sprockets to change from 1/2" to whatever size you wanted to run .

That might be an option as opossed to finding a long piece of 1/2" .Not that you can't find the stuff it's just kinda scarce .

Oregon actually makes a rim drive system for the 070/090 saws, which I have ordered with a .404 rim. I am going to convert the pitch so I can have more chain options.

I got a little off subject due to the fact I was thinking  about an 090G which in essence is an 070 variant with a gear reduction unit .

Ah..... Now that could be very handy on a gear driven saw.

Well on that over the years several people have acquired an 090g only to be snowballed trying to find 1/2" chain to fit it .The 090G has a weird looking spur gear and the original .404 optional spurs are very rare .

FWIW just about any repair or shop manual for any Stihl are hard to come by .Lots of us have illustrated  parts lists  and a few have owners manuals .What few shop manuals I have is on micro film and I have no way to copy them .

In the SM and IPL section here, there is 2 guys that have the 070 090 service manual that can be linked or emailed in pdf.  Contact them.  They are in 2 different threads there.

peppone and Roanoker494

The link in thread there no longer work and the other guy has it email-able.

Was looking for these pics on a 090 for someone.

Here is a stihl 090 I passed on a couple of years ago for $200 running and cutting with 42" , plus shipping in 2 boxes.  Do you see the one flaw that made me think think think and pass.
At the time I had 4 084 2 3120 2 166 so I really didnt need a old heavy dinosaur laying around.
