Art, you most likely will have to find a early 261 to get a coil , just make sure they use the same flywheel

From what I have been told the US 261 has always been governed. Stihl B-Net only lists one coil for the 261. I know from 3 of my own 261s and over 20 customer saws that early ones could pass 16,000.

then get a coil from 1 of the older saws and put it in , I have never seen a 261 that was not with a rev limiter in the coil around here

Called Stihl today. The 261 was always limited. Seems however that there was some upper limit variation in a few early ones. The tech was going to see if something else would work.

Saw works fine with the limited coil. May be an issue if the saw was to be a full race alcohol saw.

What kind of limits are you seeing on them?

the limiter on a 261 is the connecting rod , if screamed to hard you end up with the sound of silence , and when that happens its all over but the crying , if a non limited coil I'm sure in the 16,500 rpm range would be about correct for a modded 261

My first one would hit 17,000 on my good tach. Since 5 more have come thru the shop that would hit 16,000.
The 15,000 limit is more than plenty for work or woods port saws.

We have only had 1 crank failure so far.
