Stihl 311

Guy contacted me today about bringing in a stihl MS311 to tune up and do about 20 chains. Plus go through his dead stihl 310 that the 311 replaced.

Never seen a 311 but knew they replaced the 310.   Anyone been in 311 yet to know about them?

Do they take to muffler modding etc the way the 290 310 390 does?

I had ask the guy about muffler modding the 310 and carb retune etc for 20% quicker cuts etc and he stated I just cut firewood and do care about no 20% faster cuts through the wood.  Just get it running right etc.  This is 99.9% of the firewood cutters opinions local I run into.   Mine too now days.

I can appreciate that but just a plain ole muffler mod, that is nothing and it can make some big differences in some saws.   If they ran one before and after they would not be so hesitant.

Yeah a muffler mod is better for a saw engine in general really, especially choked up newer models. My 361 runs waaay cooler with the mm and retune. Even if someone isn't interested in the performance increase they should consider it for the longevity of the engine IMO. Sorry, can't help on the 311 though.

Yep 361 and 290-390 is some of those saws that need a muffler mod IMO even to wake up and run right stock.

Still looking for 311 info?

What are you looking for? From the parts list dont look far off from a  261 and 362. Check your email

Hey Thanks for the stihl 311 391 service manual.

I havent seen one before so didnt know what to expect .

Was wondering if folks working on them thought they responded to muffler mods etc like the 310 did.   How they were built etc, like harder to work on.

have not been in to a 311. but based of the parts list they look like a 362 should not be a problem for you. just new and take a little longer till you get use to them. had to replace a piston in a 362 and had a hard time with the twin intake manifold other than that not to bad.

I have been into a 311. Not a whole lot of different than the 310. The newer model Stihl saws ending in a "1" seem to mostly have new carburetors and air filters.

However....Before I retired, a guy brought in a MS441. He dropped a tree on it! I had to change the engine carburetor cover, handle etc. The carburetor on this new saw is a mechanical nightmare! If you ever get one of these on your bench for carburetor service, obtain a service manual and I would also recommend you take a couple pictures of it before you rip into it!

The 311 is entire different saw than a 310.  It is a stratified engine with the accompanying carb. It uses Stihl's force fed air using the flywheel to separate out the big chunks like Huskies do. It has a sealed one piece top and can use the round HD2 filter if you want.

The MS391 and 311 are the same except the 311 is 59cc and 391 is 64cc
and the 391 has an adjustable oiler.

They're modular engined saws with plastic tank housings similar to the lay of the old 1127
but share none the parts with the previous saws.

We sell a ton of the 311/391 and their pro brother the 362. Never modded the muffler on any of them yet
and only run a couple ported 362's.
