stihl ms170 chinese carb swap

I've used a few of these carbs now with no issues. some of them are a couple years old now and still going strong.

you have to drill the holes for adjustment, and the throttle rod needs to be removed from the handle to attach it to the carb as it has the hole, not the slot. very simple job. everything else fits perfect.
here's some pics in case a spring wants to try an escape :)

so far they've been pretty close out of the box as far as tuning goes. fit and finish is also very good.
saws will actually cut wood now. :)

yup. and it's supposed to accept the walbro kits. I haven't needed to do any rebuilds, and haven't opened any of them up to have a look. on the first one I decided to just toss the carb on (as most 'homeowners' would) and see how she ran. haven't needed to remove any of the carbs yet.

I should note that I stuck with the regular diaphragm cover that came on the carb. so I needed to seal the circuit in the filter housing to stop dust getting into the clean side of the filter. I just used regular clear silicone. easy to remove later for whatever reason.

I used a E.A.R. yellow foam ear plug on the hole in the filter. Well, cut4fun had a set of EAR plugs and did it at my suggestion as I read about doing it this way on a forum somewhere a few years ago. It has been about three years and the plug is still there. I have the original metering valve cover but just used the foam plug. It is a good running Chainsaw.

I've used the Walbro WAT repair kits in the Chinese replacement carbs and it worked out just fine.

So you did not have to mod the carb at all? just the airfilter box?I have seen some knock off carbs with a airfilter box with it wonder if a carb and airfilter box for an 021 /ms211 would bolt up???? i had my ms 170 and my 021 out today the 170 is very boggy in comparison....... sorry to dredge an old thread up .... thought i would use the search function before i posted.... I dont want to tear apart a new carb and jb weld it if i do not have to.....I have read many of the threads on the 215 walbro carbs and how they had to be modded is why i ask.... thanks .

Yes just install the new carb and tune it. 3 years after the fact I've had one come back due to the owner using ethanol fuel and leaving it in the saw for 2 years. For the price, I just replaced the carb. No break modification to the air box. Just plug the inteli hole.

Ran perfectly fine after the carb was replaced. It's actually one of the stronger 170's I've ran.
