Steph from Germany =
I have to say, after all my testing with the 500i and comparisons against the 462, with 24" bar, same chain, 7 to 8 pin, fully buried, timed by video fps.... The 500i never was the faster saw. Maybe it has bit more low end torque (and fits better with bars above 28") but not "speed". So it depends on the purpose.

In my personal opinion, all in all, the 462 is the better all around saw. Way better filter, even lighter, almost same cutting performance (especially here in europe, 24" counts as long bar here) and my biggest point if you have to pay the fuel prices as a professional in germany, we have to use pricy alcylate gasoline by law for commercial work, the 500i is not your friend. It sucks more fuel per working hour than a 661!

For example, a half year ago i ported a 500i for a friend and professinal logger, he used the 500i as his all day worksaw because of the low weight (almost as light as a 562xp), he thought it would be the perfect "one saw plan" but the saw is so thirsty, the fuel consumption in comparison to his former 562xp was sky rocketing! 2.5 gallons were no rarity for a normal day in the woods!

Sure, the 500i is not a bad saw and maybe the future, but it comes with some deficits. The technology behind it works flawless, the 500i of my friend has over 400h on the clock (m tronic says). The injection gives you incredible throttle response and acceleration and helps with low end torque but it lacks some fuel efficiency (but im sure later version will change that someday).

Real world info I just read from  guy in Germany on stihl 500i =That is what I thought as well! I do not think that the saw would run much worse with a normal carburetor setup. I call it a solid feasibility study .

Just a little update from the 500i i've ported (3rd. fully ported 500i, if that point is important for someone ) in may 19 for a professional customer and friend of mine, the 500i was his set up for a "one-saw-plan" with the low weight specs. But the point that the saw sucks fuel like crazy (he also had a dealer for recalibrating after porting) shattered that plan! After 6 months of everyday use and easily 2.6 gallons a day with the 500i he switched back to his 50cc/70cc/90cc setup. Here in germany you have to use expensive pre-mixed alcylate fuel by law for commercial and professional use (~17$ per gallon), so that makes up to 40$ on fuel for the saw allone per day! Now he runs a 572xp, of course it's heavier and not as powerful as the 500i but it needs nearly half as much fuel per day for about the same amount of work done! Even a 661 needs less fuel with a normal carb.

He keeps the 500i, it's a rock solid saw so far, even with 50:1 pre-mix. The saw runs flawless, no issues and up to 600 hours on it now. But it's not that super perfect the hype around it would make you believe, it has some flaws with the filter and the high fuel consumption (especially with our high fuel prices in germany)

I'm still curious how the development will continue with injection.

Thanks that's good information about these new saws.
I'm not pulling the trigger on anything new for about a year from now.
Yesterday dealer here has a MS661 and MS462 on his wall. First time I ever held a 462 and I was the first to post a picture of it on the internet years ago. Hehe.
My 562XP and 066Magnums I'm hanging onto are my saws for now.
Got 2 bikesaws to build and that's where my money is going into...more fun doing it too.
Making a living with a saw since age 16.
