Testing out a stock 500i with straight shot muffler cover. Also stock 462.  I preferred the 462.

Was also told the 500 uses 2 tanks of mix to 1 tank for the 7900 when cutting.

I got 3 of the 500's in the truck , I keep a long bar setup on one and cutup on the landing with the other , other 500 is just a spare incase I need it , so far zero problems with the 500 , it puts out lots of bar oil and makes good enough power to get the job done

The problem I see around here with the 500i is there is no one here to repair them.

For guys that dont update 500i to the Egan filter set up or the Maxflow on these.  Something this guy found to help you on stock set ups.  Pretty easy for the DIY folks.

Been running a 500i on the landing in fairly cold weather and no problems . It starts good and runs good .  But I would think if I was up north cutting in the deep snow the filter system would not work at all. It would plug up with snow in 15 seconds .  The 660 stihl setup did not work up there either. Put the old 064 filter setup on those and saws worked good then and stihl made a winter kit for those 064

one thing I can say forsure is the 500i sure likes fuel , my 462s cut about 40% more trees to the same amount the 500i uses

Jason Egan used to be a ID faller, has new filters that fit under stock filters. Newer smaller ones now too.  661 550i  and others https://eganperformancesaws.com/products/air-filter-kit

From what we are seeing on the CR repair group. You have a 50/50 chance of getting a good one.

Lot of guys showing just flat out scoring from going lean on them in first few tanks. Then guys no issues.  $1500 gamble.
