Stihl 028 woodboss not starting

About a year ago I began trying to fix an old 028 woodboss that had been sitting for about 10 years. I rebuilt the carb and it ran fine for awhile but then it wouldn't shut off (I would switch it off and it just wouldn't quit) so I replaced the ground wire and now it won't start at all unless I put a little fuel in with the spark plug and then it'll only run for 10 seconds or so and if I try to give it throttle it will die. I have taken off the fuel and impulse lines and they are not plugged nor leaking. I have cleaned the carburetor, I made sure the spark plug had a spark, and it seems like it has good compression because it will start for a few seconds with a little gas put in the spark plug hole. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Well it could be that the diaphragms in the carb have gone bad and it is no drawing any fuel.   I would put a kit in the carb and look the fuel line over real careful for any cracks in it any where.     The corrugated part of the fuel line is real good about hiding cracks.

I have a new carb on the way and I checked both the fuel and impulse lines and they seem to be fine, but if the carb does not work I will try replacing them

My 028 is a lovely saw but is an absolute nightmare to start and refuses to idle !!!

There probably is something that can be fixed.   It could be the crank seals, or the fuel line and filter, or the carburetor.   I would start by seeing if the carb can be adjusted to make it idle and go to wide open throttle without bogging down.

Bought an aftermarket carb off ebay and now it runs great.
