046 clogging with noodles
« on: May 21, 2014, 10:01:10 am »
Got a call from a guy that had two tree trunks down in his lawn that I could have for free.
Trees had been cut down by a local tree service and where 30" plus in diameter.
Took my 394xp w/34" and my 371xp w/24"  and my 046 with 24".  All new chains.
Figured I would cut them into rounds and then 1/4 or 1/8 them so I could load into truck and trailer.
Everything went fine except the 046 kept clogging up with noodles when quartering the rounds.
Clogged up right where the dawgs are and at the rear of the clutch side.
I had no problem with the other two saws clogging.
This is the first time I have used the 046 for noodling.  Not a good choice.
Anything I am missing?

Got 2 loads and have to go back for a 3rd.

I have the sprocket cover that has the rounded bottom front corner.
Mine has a crack in the cover.
Guess that was causing some friction/snagging on the noodles and thus the clogging.
Ordered a new cover.
Thanks

Chuck

I reckon that could do it.

Found a pic of crack.

Those clutch covers with clog with chips every time when ripping wood with the grain. They all do it 026-066. Have found the that the west coast covers cut4fun is talking about works a whole lot better. I have also found that if you sweep the chips out from under the saw when you get close to finishing the cut helps to keep them from clogging up. And if you cut with the rear of the saw elevated above the bar tips helps to keep them from jamming up.
FEAR NO TREE. FEAR GOD.

I have one of the deeper covers on one of my saws and it clears chips and noodles a lot better than the regular cover does.
