Stihl Contra Rebuild Questions
« on: March 13, 2017, 02:16:27 am »
Fellas -

I'm going through 3 Stihl Contra's now.  They are all completely disassembled, or close to it.

A few questions -

-Is there any reason to take the connecting rod off the crank?  I get a bit nervous about bending/tweaking something but I think I could use my connecting rod vise that I use on V8's.  I guess I need to figure out what type of bearing the big end of the rod takes, too.

-Do you replace all bearings and races?  Crank, piston pin, etc?  I have new bearings and races for the crank where it rides in the case halves.  I have some OEM and some aftermarket.  The original ones look to be in good shape so I wonder if y'all consider it a waste of time and money to swap out.

I'm reusing original jugs and pistons, but will install new Caber rings on all.

Thanks

Scott

If the big end rod bearing feels smooth and there is no up and down movement I would leave it alone. The main bearings is your call to make if I had the case split I would put bearings in it. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input.  I'll have 'em all apart at the same time, so I should be able to compare the big end bearings to each other.  If one feels iffy, I'll replace it.

Sounds like a good plan to me. When in doubt change them out. Maybe more money in parts now but may save a bunch in the long run. Keep us posted on your progress.

I would be interested in a few if you want to get rid of any.

Thanks
