Stihl HD2 air filter
« on: July 19, 2013, 02:11:41 pm »
OK so they flow better and they filter better, but they dont last. Dang is everyone's falling apart with real use?  Looks like the glue dont hold the filter to the bases worth a chit.  :o

From my perspective those cartridge type filters are only better in the sense they have more surface are so it takes more dust to clog them up .The old flock filters did a good job it was just in time they got the flock sucked out of them ---well kind of a play on words so to speak .

It may just be me, but IMO if it flows more air it can't be filtering as well, but that's just me.

For those who like K&N they make a replacement filter also that will fit most stihls. I can't remember the part number right now either but it's a little cheaper than the HD 2

I've got a K and N set up on a 2100 Husqvarna. The saw was west coaster and evidently it was a popular modidification they did .

Now is it a better filter or just a larger surface area ? I suspect the later although it must have some merit because both sides of the piston are nearly flawless.

The few that I have, seem to be holding up ok. I also run a prefilter on the outside like the old style filters, mine would get plug with chips and I could not get them out. The prefilter really helped.
FEAR NO TREE. FEAR GOD.

That design of filter is similar to what automobles use only smaller in size .Fact Briggs and Stratton use something similar .

To some extent you can blow them inside to out and clear them out but only for a limited time before the element needs to be replaced .You could probabley extent the life of them by replacing the thin foam pre filter which is not that costly .Now how many people actual do that I can't say ,I'm guilty of that myself .

All I know is I ordered the stihl HD filter like I used to use on my saws  066 660 084 for this 046 build. I know they work and stay together.  ::)
