Stihl 170
« on: October 03, 2017, 10:20:57 pm »
Hi, I've got one of these -new in 05- that was running good until lately. It now wants to bog some when going from idle to full throttle. It seems like it needs a carb adjustment but I don't believe there is one other then idle. I've always used E-free gas & sea-foam along with Stihl or Husky oil. It don't have a whole lot of run time considering it's from 05, so I'm not sure what kind of tweak it takes to clear it's throat.
Any suggestions?

Open the L side up some  counterclockwise. Check make sure you dont have the epa stops on it. If so pull.    It is prob missing the H side but should have I and  L. L has to do with that trigger response.

Carb diaphragm might be  getting stiff but try opening the L first.

New oem carbs with L and H like $25 new so weigh decision f it ends up needing carb lit.

Saw is 12 years old and I don't care if you have always used non-E gas, it is time to change the fuel line and filter.   My MS210 needs a fuel line just about every season even using Stihl parts.
We just drag them down..... Until they're just like us !!!  BNL

Thanks for the info. I used it awhile today and it seems to be running rich.....oily muffler. Also used my 211 - same fuel- and it burned clean. I'll try what you guys suggested and put a new plug in also.

Oem Carb was likely single needle. They run good and well - balanced when as new.

Little stihl 170 in for some work. Throttle not working and on/off switch not working.

I've done the redneck echo fuel line trick in alot of different saws. Stihls mainly the 025 290-390. But this is first 170 I tried it in. Perfect. No more oem lines that just give up ghost. Never cared for the molded lines in their whole older plastic series myself.
Stihl 170. Guy never ran ethonal fuels. He always efree and also can fuels too. Stihl 390 025 170 and now 261 replaced 025. The 390 025 has been redone over the years too. Till 025 last fix was more then saws worth.
Never had one come back needing fuel lines after doing them with echo line to date.
Cool thing about this guy. He cleans his saws up before dropping off. All his saws always look like new. Just firewood cutter in late 70's.
