Stihl MS500i with ethanol fuel
« on: May 09, 2019, 07:27:41 pm »
This could be interesting.
As the Stihl MS500 has no carb what are the problems likely to be regarding ethanol based fuels?
You always hear ethanol problems related to carb powered machines.
Modern cars seem happy on ethanol based fuel and have been fuel injected for over 20 years.
Some very high powered supercars sometimes throw up a warning if you use inferior fuel but i think
this is more to do with using fuel with an insufficient octane rating.
As long as the pipes and tank hold up i dont see any problems during regular use

The manufactures may have engineered out the materials that E-fuel attacks, but that won't change the scourge of E-fuel which is phase separation and being a magnet for water/moisture in fuel.

To be honest there are plenty of addives that reduce the problem. Personally I use BC3 Ethonol Shield added to high octane petrol.
I use Stihl HP Super or Ultra oil which also has additives added to combat ethonol problems.

I follow what somebody suggested a couple of years ago. Add some water in the fuel before adding oil. Shake it well and leave overnight.
Carefully pour out the fuel. The Ethanol (hopefully) would have been caught in the water.
