Stihl MS880 updated one
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:36:17 pm »
Had a guy ask me a question and I havent had the new updated stihl 880 in my hands.  I was telling him about using the 084 088 or MS880 piston in the stihl 084.
He ask if that included the new updated  MS880 built after 2009 with piston part number 1124 030 2002 and bolt on muffler with muffler cover etc. The older MS880 before 2009 used 1124 030 2007 piston.

Anyone know if they are the same piston with updated part number only?

Is there now a muffler to replace the "cast" aluminum muffler ????? I hope not........... I just ordered a cast one (over $227), from the dealer  >:(

Just thought about it...... probably wouldn't work with the old style cylinder that uses the spring & wedges to secure it on.

IPL showing new muffler and new cylinder on 880 and old 880 IPL too.  http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/2063828/ms880-pl-pdf-july-13-2010-11-24-am-509k?dn=y

jmester = In 2009 stihl updated the 880. They changed about everything different crankcase, flywheel ignition module, cylinder etc.

On the ignition module they went from a 3 screw mount to a 2 screw mount.

Flywheel from poly to aluminum.

As mentioned above the 361 and or 441 module works with the aluminum flywheel. For non rev limited.

The poly flywheel 1124 400 1210 is shared by both the 088 and early 880.

The 880 uses ignition module 1124 400 1301

The 088 uses ignition module 1124 400 1309
Read that this is non limited as well. But have no first hand knowledge.

The proverbial universal 0000 400 1300 module may work but I don't know. Would take some custom fitment.

saving some interesting info.

John = MS880/088, does anyone know if the OEM poly flywheel is not compatible with the farmertec coil? Had an oem saw with a blown apart case and swapped the oem parts I could to the farmertec case. I learned the oem and farmertech coils are completly different. But now it seems like the timing is off with the oem coil and farmertec coil. Its hard to start and runs very rough once it is started.

Tom = The poly coil 880 is basically an 088 so, it's a different flywheel and coil than the later 880 (different timing). The later OEM 880 used a metal flywheel and a different coil (I believe it was a 1124 coil that was a limited version of the 361 coil).
The Farmer tec 880 is based off the later version of the 880 so thats your issue.
I think the poly flywheel 880 can use an ms660 coil but you will need to do some fabrication to make it fit.

Tom = early 880 had the cast aluminum muffler and the poly flywheel.
Not sure if any of the later 880's with the 2 piece muffler came with the poly or if they were all metal
I'm definitely not an expert either, just information I ran across while looking into my 088 vs my buddies late 880

John = yeah this one was the clamp on cast aluminum early 880. I figured that out when this farmertec case showed up and the muffler didn't fit. Lol. Luckily my customer did have a new used OEM later 880 cylinder so all we had to by was a farmertec exhaust. But, then the OEM coil didn't fit, 3 screw version. So we ordered a farmertc coil. But now the flywheel is an issue also. hahaha, I can't win!

Tom = try a 660 coil or other coil that shares the same timing as the 660/460/461/046/ect
That should solve your issue, try to stay to unlimited coils

Ethan = yes timing is different between coils and flys, 361 coil works with aluminum fly but my preference is poly and 3 leg

John = the 3 leg dont work on the farmertec case unfortunately. I already ordered the aluminum flywheel. Thanks for confirming what Tommy said though.

Guy rebuilding a Gen1 stihl ms880 with the later Gen2 880 p+c and muffler.  Not a 088 like pics say. Was just the early run 880 before change.

Didnt not know that would happen.
