Stihl Plastic
« on: April 16, 2014, 01:01:48 am »
I'm all about function over form(you should see the trucks I drive). However, I recently traded for three Stihl saws that all have prices written on the filter cover in permanent marker and I think it's throwing the tune off. :o I know acetone will take off about anything, but I also know it will put a permanent "fog" on many plastics. So, I'm looking for ideas that some of you may have used to restore a factory shine to old plastic. Thanks.

You could try Goo Gone or Hoppe's #9 bore cleaner.

At our local dollar store they sell a product called Awesome which is very similar to Purple Power. These you can cut back to 50-50 with water or use full strength.

At any rate...try a dab of any of the above before doing the whole cover.

I have never really tried myself to restore the plastic on any of my saws so I am interested on what you come up with.

I think this is the one site that allows me to upload pics so I'll take before and after and see if they'll upload to the site. I'm not computer savvy and this *$&%& laptop is giving me grief lately so we'll see. I'll figure out a way. Will keep you posted.

My first post on this topic was for the removal of the permanent marker. However when I "detail" a saw after repair, I use a product called "Awesome" which is a degreaser like Purple Power. I apply it full strength with a spray bottle and I will not allow it to dry on the plastic! Then rinsed off with the garden hose. The hard to reach areas I use a soft detail brush dipped into the Awesome. When the rinse water has dried, I apply automotive wax and buff to a shine. If the plastic has UV damage, I have found nothing that will bring back the luster it had when new. Hopefully someone has and will share their findings.

There is also a product called "Knockout"  It is used to remove unsavory words and images from buildings and cars. Cleans up plastic real well. It even takes the fade out of ATV plastic. Good Stuff..
