Strange Compression Issue on 200t
« on: May 03, 2016, 07:47:01 pm »
I took on trade, a 200t that owner couldn't get to run and he thought crank bearings were bad or crankshaft was bent?
A few days later I somewhat checked the saw out. This individual had installed a Chinese? ? cylinder kit and had misaligned the flywheel key and forced the nut tight. That might have been the indication the crank was bent?? Flywheel, of course,  was hitting coil.
Now, I ran a compression check and got 90 lbs.
Tore the motor apart and everything looks new, with .005 ring end gap.
Why only 90#? Gauge is not wrong, just pulling the cord told me compression was very low. Is this typical of china junk cylinder kits?

Probably the cylinder or the rings or both are out of round .

That's what I was thinking, but haven't had time to really check.
I have never used a Chinese replacement cylinder but this doesn't surprise me.

In a true sense new rings do not seat instantly .The worse is new rings on an old cylinder. It takes some time before they get  fully seated .

If you can get that thing to start  run the snot out of it.It will either straighten  out or blow up.By the sound of things if it does blow a piston you're not out too much

I've never used an after market cylinder on anything but I have used AM pistons .So far I've had good luck .

Yes Al, I realize that. I have rebuilt hundreds of engines, from caterpillar diesel to tiny two strokes.
One must realize that if you could ever get an engine to run, on 90# compression, rings would eventually seat.
But ring gap would also increase.
Instead of trying to work with Low Quality China Junk, I think I will wait for a used P/C.
I would rather have a worn quality part then new China.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Did you measure the squish.   I was just wondering what it was.

I'm thinking the squish is around .035 on a stock 200.It might be such a thing it could be fixed by shaving a little off the cylinder base to raise the compression .Not much to loose,it doesn't run the way it is .
