MS025 chain not getting oil
« on: August 30, 2014, 01:23:27 pm »
Hi,
I have an MS 025 that had worked great until recently.  However right now the chain isn't getting any oil. When I hold it up to a clean surface and rev it all the way it will occasionally sling a little oil off the chain. The chain doesn't cut well and gets little burn marks on each link within a few cuts.

I've taken the cleaned the bar and verified oil is being pumped out the oil port when I remove the bar and rev the engine. The chain groove and holes appear to be clean on the bar.

One thing I noticed is the oil port doesn't line up with the oil holes on the bar. I assume that's normal, although it seems it would keep oil from making it to the chain.

Could a new bar fix this?

Alan

The hole alignment of the bar seems to be the problem?

If you buy another bar, make sure the holes align?

One guy on here moved the hole over on his existing bar so the the saw would oil.

I have three of these saws with 16" X .325 Stihl Rollomatic E bars and they oil fine.

I'll go to the local dealer and see if the holes on their new bars are aligned differently from my bar.

Is it a Still bar? I'm not sure why they wouldn't line if it is?? I don't know of Stihl making bars for any other pattern than their saws.

You said that it used to oil with the same bar, right?  Holes did not move.

Behind the clutch cup is a plastic worm gear that drives the oil pump.  There is a wire that connects this gear to the notch in the clutch cup.  I had this wire come off on a STIHL saw - was a $12 part to replace.  Would be a good thing to check.

I've attached a picture of my pump wire.  Looks OK to me but I wanted to get your opinions.

The wire looks OK to me.

You had mentioned in your first post that oil comes out of the oil port of the saw when you remove the bar and rev up the chainsaw.

If the wire is still attached to the plastic worm gear, it is probably OK.

Figured that itmight still dribble out.

Always hard to diagnose at a distance, so I tired to suggest one of the basic things.  Once you have covered: clogged filter or lines; clogged vents; summer weight oil in winter temps; oil pump turning; there is very little left.  Only times I have had trouble with oil coming out of the pump and not getting to the bar, it has been: a clogged bar oil hole or grooves; or the bar was not mounted right/tight against the housing and oil was spilling out from the bottom of the saw.
