Stihl 036 Max Bar
« on: May 15, 2015, 11:47:37 am »
I muffler modded and did the carb mod on my friends 036. He had a new 20" bar and chain that he bought because the 28" bar and chain were worn out--at least the chain was.
He wanted me to sharpen the 28" chain and it was useless.
It has a 375 chain setup and I told him the saw would not pull a 28" B/C and would possibly pull a 325?
I told him, if he wanted to use the 28, he needed a bigger saw.
Did I advise him right.

PNW  guys would run that all day in softwoods.  Hardwoods I wouldnt.   To me the 62cc is a good 20"
But you got guys with 1 saw so 24" to 28" works into their plans.

I have run a 24" bar and full comp chain on my 361 at 59cc. It does ok but takes a while, which is why that task is now filled by a Stihl 460. The oil pump isn't really meant to handle that much bar either, though the older 036 probably would do a little better. Overall I'd say that's definitely good advice you gave him. I'd want 70cc+ for a 24" or larger bar. You can get by with less but will need to be patient.

28" time for a bigger powerhead.
Stihl sells a 3003 mount 22" , that's  a nice size bar for a 60-70cc
