The ongoing 044 saga
« on: October 27, 2014, 08:18:54 pm »
So I pressure and vac tested this saw and it passed with flying colors.  No leaks.

Rebuilt the Zama C3M Carb but it still huffs blue smoke, runs rough all out and won't idle.  It just dies at idle.

So I think I'm just going to buy a new carb since this carb was really nasty when I rebuilt it.

So here's the problem:

I can't seem to find a carb for an 044.  Yeah, sounds crazy, especially when a couple hundred of them come up on EBAY.  But they all are like the carb on my 029.  They have this little thing on the top that looks like a hood scoop and the air filter is designed to fit over that as well as the carb opening.  In case I'm not making any sense, check this out:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-CARB-CARBURETOR-FITS-STIHL-044-046-MS440-MS460-GAS-CHAINSAW-/221407458255?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338ce9b3cf

See the little hood-like thing on top?  The ZAMA doesn't have one of those.

So what should I do?

That scoop is just a vent for the metering valve and it plugs into the air filter.

You can replace it with a regular metering valve cover.

Looks to me like a copy of a Walbro HD series carb

Flat metering cover part# for walbro
Stihl 4116 121 0800
Walbro 21-3230

Flat metering cover part# for Zama
Stihl 1125 121 0803
Zama 0028019
FEAR NO TREE. FEAR GOD.

you sure there isn't any leaks? it might be sucking bar oil onto the crank case and that might be where the 'blue smoke' is coming from.

The saw passed both pressure and vacuum tests.  If it were sucking bar oil, wouldn't it fail the vacuum test?

Here's a possible clue: it does leak bar oil.  I was going to fix that, but not until I got it running right, figuring there's no sense fixing an oil leak before I can get it running.  I thought the bar oil leak might be either pump seals or a worn oil pump barrell.

Bar oil smokes like mad when run through a running engine. It doesn't take but just a small amount to make a lot of smoke.

Yes, but how would that affect how the saw runs?  Would it exhibit the other issues of rough running and not able to idle?  The saw was well within the parameters for holding vacuum.  So a small vacuum leak is acceptable.  In fact, you could probably "tune out" even a larger leak.

I'm not questioning your knowledge, as you obviously know way more than I about these things.  But, I can get a new carb for 17 bucks delivered.  Maybe it's worth a shot, instead of tearing the whole saw down which could take hours.  Time is money.

A saw will not start if there is very much bar oil at all in the engine. Some bar oil just messes up the combustion process.

Why not look at the spark plug and see if it is smutty and maybe oily?

You don't have much to loose with a $7 carb so try it?

A dealer gave me a old Dolmar 111i and ran rich and if you tried to lean it out the saw wouldn't start and run.

The high speed nozzle check valve was blown in the carb. I put a new carb on the saw and it ran like a new one.
