Here's something I forgot to add that just occured to me:

I drained all the chain oil from the tank and cleaned it out with brake cleaner.  It was making a mess on my bench and I didn't want it messing up the place until I got the saw running correctly and then turned my attention to the chain oiler.

So, with that in mind, I think the chance that it is bar oil contaminating the engine is minimal.  I think I'll order that carb.  This was the one I was thinking of getting:

Can I take the plate off my zama to cover the metering valve opening, or is there another part to get?   That carb looks identical to the Zama c3m that's currently on the saw, with the exception of the metering valve cover.  I looked for the parts listed by jmester but couldn't find them.  They are NLA

You should be able to swap covers. On the metering valve side of the carb, the gasket is between the diaphragm and the carb body. So the cover just fits directly against the rubber diaphragm.

Bar oil smoke is white.  Did you call your Stihl dealer or a zama or walbro dealer. Some small carb parts like that are hard to find on line.

Over the years I've put some together and oil the cylinder and bearings well at assembly. It took a while to get all the motor oil out of the engine & muffler. I recently did a Stihl 025. I had run it a little around the shop to adjust the carb. My 40 year old son got a hold of it and started some buried cuts and it was smoke city until the oil got burned out of the muffler.

Well, finally got the carb yesterday and put it on and the saw ran a lot better.  It still smokes badly, though.  I need to dial in the carb, me thinks.  I'll turn the H & L screws per the shop manual's recommendation.  It's been really cold here though (Northern Illinois) and should warm up to 50 this weekend.  Will try to dial it in this weekend.  If the smoke doesn't clear, it's time to split the cases.  The chain oiler does leak out the bottom of the saw, but that may just be a seal.  Didn't want to fix the chain oiler leak until I was sure the saw was running correctly.  Thanks for all the replies.  Sure made this a lot easier.

Get it heated up real good in a big log and see if the smoke gets burned out and clears up?

Your not running marine two stroke oil are you. And what is your ratio. Also as 660 mentioned above the smoke should clear up if you run it through a couple of cuts.

The H screw on the new carb was two full turns out.  I bottomed it out and backed it off one full turn like the shop manual says and did same for L and it's running like a champ now.  Smoked for about 20 seconds at 13,000rpm and then smoke went away.
