Trouble with 192T

My 192T has been in full time use for 3.5 years, with just basic maintenance.

Usually starts fine on a full tank of gas. Seems to have more trouble starting lower down in the tank. Wondering if its a hole in the fuel line or something like that. When its warm, I'll still have to full/ then half choke it to get it to start often. Never had the carb cleaned or replaced. I will have to check the fuel filter to make sure that its clean enough. Can't remember when I replaced it last.

I've not take a saw carb off or cleaned one before, but I'm not the dullest tool in the shed for maintenance/ repair work.

What would be a good starting point for testing/ cleaning. Where can I find some info on checking/ replacing the fuel line, and cleaning/ replacing the carb, if appropriate?

Thanks for any input. If I can repair it myself, I feel like it would be worthwhile, but to take it to the shop wouldn't be cost effective.

I'm hoping to sell my back-up echo top-handle and a MS 211 to turn that money into part of the cost of a 200T, and have this 192T as a good backup and pruning saw.

If it's been running that long it stands a good chance the carb needs rebuild .

It may sound odd indeed but the ethanol in the gas causes the carb diaphragms to loose their resiliancey over time weather they sit or are used on a regular bassis .

Rebuilding a carb is relatively simple . Just google whatever make of carb it is ,download the tutorial of the model and follow directions .The kits are pretty cheap ,10-12 bucks maybe  .A little more at a dealer than a parts supplier .

Found a 192T IPL. No service manual yet.

Maybe the tank clunker filter is dirty, sounds familiar !

Change the fuel filter, but most likely it's the carb. Here's where things get fun, this is a finiky damn carb and at best, it's a 50/50 shot a rebuild will fix it. As I recall, the kit was $25 from Stihl and the carb was $75 from Stihl.
The gaskets have to be stacked, and stacked properly for the diaphragm to have room to move properly. Kind of a PITA for sure!
Start with the filter, if that doesn't work, price out a carb. If you can get the carb for $75ish, buy, put it on and be happy. I'm pretty sure any Stihl dealer will back me up on the 50/50 call, but ask them.

I don't know if these things suffered from funky carbs like the 200's or not .

I had an occasion to buy one for little nothing from a dealer that had evidently taken a great fall like Humpty Dumpty .I passed !

Now probabley if you disect that carb and find stiff innards that's the problem .If not something else .Get out those tools and get with it . ;D

These have a worse carb than the 200t, if you can believe that! I forget what they told me about them, but said they just gave up on rebuilding them at my local shop. He said for a 50/50 rate, a $25ish rebuild kit and labor, it was easier, and cheaper for the customer just to put on a new carb and run the saw.
For comparison, I think the rebuild kit for the 200t is around $15 and unless the carb is ****, it's easy to do, these, not so much! You really have to pay attention to the way the gaskets come out, as I said, they stack spacers around the diaphragm to give it room and you need to put the same amount in, in the right spot as you take out.
Never seen such a finicky damn carb to rebuild, I'd rather rebuild a Q-jet than one of these things Al!

I got a carb kit to install. Never done it.


Likely  be a silly question, should I use carb cleaner to clean the carb as best I can when I rebuild. I thought somewhere I read to use brake cleaner to soak a carb.

What do I need to know about dis/reassembly of the carb and adjusting it?

I'm concerned about it running to high and blowing up.

Been a long time since I even adjusted a carb with a tach, now I don't have one.

Got it fixed (I think). Wasn't bad really. Woulda helped to have an air compressor, a lot of gunk around the carb that took a while to clean out. Just didn't want to venture into unknown territory and screw something up, costing more that if I had taken it to a professional in the first place.
