Using different oils/fuel
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:46:58 pm »
Hi there,

I just purchased my first chainsaw, a Stihl MS310 farm boss, I bought it second hand.

One question I can't seem to fin the answer for anywhere , is that the previous owner obviously used his own type of oil and fuel mix. Being someone that likes to look after my equipment , I always buy more expensive products - in this case the Stihl Ultra oil mix and the Stihl own brand bar oil.

Now what if I want to use these? Looking just at the oil, it's clear the previous owner is using a different oil - and I'm worried about mixing products and damaging the saw. Can I simply just empty out both tanks and re-fill them with my Stihl products or do I have to clean the saw out? '

The fuel I don't think will be a big deal? The engine will just use up the old fuel and start using the new one I assume, but the bar oil I'm not sure of. The main reason being the old oil looks like thick olive oil where as the Stihl Ultra I bought looks really thin and dark, basically the complete opposite.

It will not hurt to mix either one of them.   With the cold weather not to far away the thinner oil will flow a little better.

I am using the Stihl 2 cycle mix oil and the Stihl bar and chain oil myself.  Not a bad choice on your part in my opinion.

You will likely need to re-tune the needles as the air-fuel ratio requirements may be different with the different fuel? Just take it as as it comes to make the saw run correctly. Winter is coming and you likely will need to adjust the needles anyway? When it gets colder outside, you have to open up the High speed needle.

The bar oil will not make any difference. Fill up the oil tank and go cutting

I run bike oils for the most part. Cheaper than ultra without the stink. Stihl bar oil is over priced to me. You won't have any problems with changing oils.

stick with quality 2 stroke oil, FD rated and synthetic. Bar oil use whatever is cheapest and works good. stihl bar oil is overpriced but a quality product. this is one of those cases where about everyone is going to tell you its no problem to mix the oils and move on but have a different opinion on brand of 2 stroke oil to run.

http://www.spectrumcorporation.com/t-products.aspx

They package almost all the chainsaw and box store branded oils except Stihl.

They are in Selmer TN near Memphis.

Seem to be somewhat affiliated with Citgo

i have looked and couldn't track down who makes it. if spectrum does most of them i wonder how many brands are a special blend and how many are the same oil just in a different bottle?

everybody has their preference and so far those two have served me well on stock and the ported saws that are around here. don't figure i will switch from them anytime soon as i keep plenty of each on the shelf
