What do you guys think?
« on: November 17, 2012, 04:48:21 pm »
I have a 5 year old 021 18" bar and I left fuel in it ..it would start but not stay running and I took it to my local shop to fix it . he calls me up and said that he rebuilt the carb and had it running then it froze up and I am out of luck...this saw still has the original chain and is only used to cut up limbs and small logs and this guy is saying that its common for the wrist pin to come loose and lock the motor up ...what do you guys think ???? thanks for your help. ...

I would get my  saw back and see why it is locked up on my own. Could just be something behind the flywheel or coil loose and hitting flywheel etc.   JMO

How in the world could the pin come loose unless the circlip came loose ? It happens but it doesn't happen very often .

Go get the thing and peel it down yourself .If you find a screw stuck in the cylinder don't be surprised .

I think your dealer wants to sell you a new saw!!!!!

Go pick it up and tell him that you are going to Wal-Mart to buy one of those new Poulan 5020's to replace it!
That should make him stammer and stutter!!!LOL

I bought not too long ago an 024 the dealer said had a fried piston, cheap 50 bucks .All I did was cut the baffles out of the muffler and I've used the snot out that little thing since .

Now mind you I'm not faulting the dealer because urban legion dictates everything has to be perfect ,a common misconception with the unknowing .Most likely  the previous owner thought it was time to replace .

Now I'm not saying the mechanic screwed up the saw but it certainly is coincidental on a simple carb rebuild the saw would lock up .

According to what has been said it is assumed it's something stuck in the cylinder rather than a sieze of a lean run .It's not that hard to feed a saw something it can't digest like a screw because I've had it happen to me .Unintentional but it does happen .Luckily in my case it wasn't fatal to the engine .

Go get the saw, don't rush out to buy another just yet nor rush to judgement .

Take the starter off and roll the saw over backwards which if is a screw will unstick it ,piston pin no .If it swallowed a screw most likely the mechanic will deny he caused the problem but you'll know .The dealer won't do anything about so you're wasting time even talking except personal satisfaction for however much that is worth .

If it is the pin the guy was correct .Simple as that .

Rambling on as usual .I landed a low hours Ms 200T from a dealer for 20 bucks .It was assumed it tossed a piston .What had happened was the pin that holds the clutch brake had fallen off and been replaced .The old pin rattled around the underside of the engine and found it's way into the balancing hole of the flywheel .The magnets sucked in in and hung the engine .So the crux of that little story is that strange things can happen and often be misdiagnosed .

Hey Guys...thanks a lot for all your input...I went back and spoke to the manager of the shop...these guys have a good reputation and have been good to me in the past for parts and service...and  it was just as I thought...the mechanic never told the boss what was happening and the boss said to me that he was going to tear it down and will call me later...I wished them a happy thanksgiving and told them I felt better now .... and after reading in this forum I have gotten excited about another saw to to cut up this 2nd growth fir tree that is has been down for a couple of months...I will need at least a 24" bar for this fir...a friend has a 044 Stihl for sale that has low power and smokes and it would be fun to go through this old warhorse and make some saw dust....what do you guys think????? Thanks again...Mike

The 044 Stihl is a great old design still worth it's weight in gold. Easy to work on and parts still readily available. I have a few of these older saws collecting dust that one day I'll clean up and send them to a new home.
The only complaint I hear about these older pro saws today is they don't come with a decompression valve.

If you think you need a 24" b/c, maybe all you really need is 20", excellent balance and ease of usability on a 044.
Making a living with a saw since age 16.
