The good ole 44 was a dandy .Much weeping and gnashing of teeth when it got retired from the line up .Low power could be anything ,blowing smoke only about two things ,extremely rich on oil mixture or extremely rich carb setting .

Now if it were set extremely rich that is why it would appear to have no giddy up and go .

Buy that thing if it's cheap enough .It could be just a carb setting worse case a set of rings which are cheap .Hour and a half to change them ,maybe less .

Well I went and picked up the saw yesterday...the Manager said that it now runs fine and said that they had found this in it and hands me a plastic bag with a fuel needle in it and said that they have no Idea how that got into the motor he also said that it was a non chainsaw part...I said that it looked like a fuel inlet needle from a carb. and a hush came over the shop because they were counting on myself not knowing what this was so they could charge me labor...at this time the manager disappeared and the lady presented me with the bill she said that they were only going to charge me for the carb kit and labor so I got away for $55.00 and the saw does run good ...if they would have been honest and been truthful they would still have me for a customer...I am glad that I have my saw back and now that I have found this forum I am going to do my own work...thanks...Mike

Mike

They rebuilt the carb and some how a needle got ingested.    I'll keep my opinion to myself.   ;)

The title of the post intrigued me, and I'm glad I read it.  I had quite a few chuckles over it.  Glad everything worked out for Mike. ;D

More to the story...I  picked up the saw and paid for the carb kit, and new spark plug and labor...$55.00 total a fair deal..here in Oregon...I fire up the saw to cut up this small fir tree that came down in the wind and it runs good for less that 2 minutes  runs like crap for another 2 then stalls....One of the great things about you guys and this site is the confidence and knowledge that flows out of it so I remove the carb figuring on replacing it with a new one and took it apart...the carb had some graudoo in it that looked like peanut butter mixed with vasoline I cleaned out with carb spray cleaner and blew it out with air and re assembled  I looked up on the internet how to adj the carb and fired it up....ran great....made some sawdust from the fir .... a couple of nice logs for the wood stove..so I **** a cold one...and felt pretty good...thanks for all your help guys.... On Monday Am I called the shop and asked to speak to the manager...I told what happened and  that I wasn't  angry..I was just disappointed that a shop that I respected and relied upon had performed in this way and if I was the manager I would want to know ...she said that she wquld get back to me...thanks again....Mike

;) I think you're catching on . The best plan is just learn how to do it youreslf rather than rely on anyone else .Thee are some people wrenching on saws and small engines that would be better suited in another line of work .

Sometimes it makes you wonder .About two weeks ago I took Mrs Smiths' Mercury in for an oil change simpley because the dealership can do it cheaper than I can buy the oil and filter .

So pulled in my garage afterwards  and I'll  be damned if one tire showed low pressure on the dash indicator ,Hmm .Blew it up to 31 PSI and never since had a problem .Odd  indeed because it didn't just leak out on it's own.

I bought an 18 HP mower one time cheap  because a danged dealer told the guy a mouse had built a nest in his engine and that was why the thing was only running on one out of two cylinders .P T Barnum never really passed away it seems .
