The Dolmar 421 is a nice chainsaw for it is the largest iteration of that size Dolmar frame.  People just love them.

I have a '97 111i that a local dealer gave me in a not running condition some years ago. I put a new carb on it and it is one of my favorite 3 cube saws. I wound up with a like new 115 cylinder in a horse trade last year so I redid the 111 into a 115 including a new piston.

It will not win a cookie race with a ported 346XP in a shoot out but it is just a nice saw in the woods.

Just got a new 421 last week $230.  Thought I got a pretty decent buy.  Now somebody tell me they got a new one for a buck fifty LOL.  Doing a MM on it as we speak.  Thought it was gonna be easy just pop out the cat section and put it back together.  Not so it's gonna take a little more than that.

new or used doesn't matter just a good saw for a good price.  I just picked up a 5105 that needs a little piston/cylinder work so I am going to give it a shot but always on the lookout for a 421/420......farm boy 230 sounds like a good price...was it new?

Yep!  Brand new in the box along w/warranty card.  I just spent hours and I mean hrs w/Dremel and cutoff wheels doing a MM on it.  Cut out round cat peice so I could cut around the edges to get the cat plate out to enlarge opening under deflector.  I thought it was going to be a 15 min job just pop out the cat plate.  Here is the 15 min removal:  On front of muffler there are 3 spot welds under deflector one on right side, 1 on left, 1 close to one on R offcenter on right.  Flip muff cover over you can see spot welds by round cat 1 r/1l.  Don't worry about the 3rd one thats close to the R one.  Drill them out, whole cat plate pops right out.  Can't do pics yet hope this doesn't confuse too much.  If I can get my daughter up here I'll take some pics.

I've got a like new 420 and it is a GREAT saw.
I'm not sure the cat removal is worth the trouble.
Have you tried to order a non-cat muffler for a 420?

I had a 6400 and a 5105 and both had catalytic mufflers. I replaced both mufflers with the earlier non catalytic variations instead of dealing with modifying the catalytic type mufflers. They just look like the earlier model chainsaw with a later model number on it.

The chainsaws didn't run noticeably any faster with the stock non-catalytic muffler but weighed a lot less.

I work at a local dolmar dealer and our cost on a 421 is way higher than 230. That's a good deal.
