Dolmar\Makita 6401 piston
« on: June 20, 2014, 10:10:25 pm »
I am in need of a Piston (prefer OEM) for a Makita 6401

I have a good jug, but the piston has seen better days

Or would trade the OEM jug and litte green men for a 73 cc or 79 cc OEM top end kit.

Thanks and look forward to future conversation (Newb here. I am a member of other forums and recognize a lot of faces)

Buy a meteor 359 husky piston for $30 and widen the ports a bit. Makes a nice torquey work saw

Dexter, pay close attention to what Adam said. He is a great guy and KNOWS what he is doing! If I had a 6400 round here I would be doing it!

Is this a direct bolt on?

As for the ports? Are yyou talking about the windows in the piston (widen)? Or the actual ports (open port 3 sided)?

If this will work, with some minor grinding on the windows? I will no doubt go this route! Opening the windows isn't a problem, if it's the actual ports on the cylinder?  I don't feel that comfortable doing that myself.

Thanks for the help. Always looking for helpful and insightful info

I believe that what Adam is referring to is the 359 Husqvarna piston has a wider skirt on both the intake and exhaust sides of the piston than the OEM 6400 piston. Which will allow you to widen both the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder. Not really a hard thing to do. However, I will warn you that the quickest way to ruin something is reach for a Dremel! ::)

Dexter,
the husqvarna 359 piston is a exact fit for the 6400, no mods needed. If you are so inclined the wider skirts will allow the intake and exhaust to be widened. I also raised the exhaust port a couple mm to add a bit more blow down. This is an easy mod and improves the saws power.

Where abouts are you located?

I wouldn't mind a little more grunt from the 64 cc jug  ;D
