Partner 5000 or 500 chain brake/ side cover
« on: January 03, 2012, 07:07:02 pm »
Well I got my Partner 5000 / 500 service manual my nephew bought it for me from e-bay.
In the mean time I have accidently run over one of my 5000's  I destroyed the "D" handel ,chain brake cover and recoil cover. I had enough spare parts to rebuild most of it but I will need a chain brake cover.Does anyone have a chain brake cover they would part with? Actuall I would take 2 if I could get them/ you never know.
I have searched and joined 2 other sites but still no luck finding parts.I have joined Chainsaw repair.I will begin looking at old saw shops in my area in Central Maine to see if any are lying about. If anyone knows a good place to look let me know and I will check it out. This was pasted  by me from the Tractorbynet forum when it was pointed out to me that I had not made this request here. Thanks Jeff

I know between me and a few others you should be able to get what ever you need. I have NOS clutch and recoil covers etc.

Could you make a list of what all you need.

Like clutch cover plain or brake parts
Handle
Recoil shell
etc
etc

Tomorrow I will see a 500 with a broken "D" handel complete saw $50.00

I am planing on buying all of them I would rather you guys are able to keep what ever you have ammased in parts for now anyway. "

Thats the best way is to buy parts saws for parts. Lot cheaper in long run.

To free up a bad crank bearing. I would split case remove both bearings. Put 2 new bearings in $10 total and 2 new seals and reused crank gasket if you can keep from ripping it.  Why chance ruining the saw totally with a iffy $5 crank bearing.

Well there is a reason I asked that.
First off I did just a moment ago buy a Partner 500 fo $40.00 it has a broken control handel but I have spare pats.I may have listed the saws that I was about to look at in the wrong order.
Now as for the crank bering:
I am prettty handy but not very confidant.I have changed jugs and Pistons, clutchs and stuff but I have NEVER been inside a split case,,, the fact is I have never opened a case. I was reading in my new service manual about spliting the case.It seems that to remove the flywheel you need some special tool.We used to use flywheel pullers in High School but I do not even have one of those .Also I am not sure if I need to compleatly remove the crank from the saw if so is'nt there somthing on the opposite side as well? a oil pump gear sounds about right ? But I am not sure. Then it said the case must be heated up to accept the new seals? Not to sound like a nooby but This kind of scares me some. I have done a lot more thn some people but I am not on par with you guys either. So that is why I was wondering if I could free up the crank bering.I agree withassement though, that I wanted to install new bering and seals as well she would be almost as good as new then. I wonder if there is somebody on this site close to me in Maine that would stand over me while I do that?

Can I buy the fly wheel puller that is talked about in my service manual still? and also the seal driver and oil pump tool? Or are there other ways to skin this cat ? we used to pull the flywheel by giving the loosend nut a sharp rap with a hammer while prying up on the on the underside of the flywheel. As far as setting the seals I would have most likely used a socket of proper size? but the oil pump,.....Never seen one dont have a clue.

Oil pump comes right out. The worm gear you will have to redneck make a tool and use heat to pull gear off crank.

Flywheel I just do as you with nut on flat and hit, also have a 3 jaw generic puller that works too.

Seals I use socket.

Bearing heat case knock out and install with sockets or do the vise method with sockets cold. Both work.

My nickles worth.

There is a OEM worm gear remover $50. Redneck it with heat and homemade puller or cut off.

Old Iron Logging  told me about it and I tried it on the poulan 365 rebuild. Worked like a charm. 1st saw I tried that way without using the wifes oven to heat cases with other method.
Use socket press out and press in. Nothing to it.

One more thing when you were telling me about the worm gear one of the things you said was redneck it or "cut off" what did you mean cut off if i cut off the worm gear i will be out of luck when i get ready to put things back together. Also if i ruin the gasket when i split the case will blue Permatex work instead?

Cut only IF you have another gear to put back on.

I have only used Threebond 1194 for gasket sealer and IF crankcase came with gasket I put a gasket back in. Thats your call on putting gasket back in, but I would use 1194. Might mess up clearance, might not.

5000 uses gasket. My 3750 330 365 I just did not use gasket only sealer.

I doubt you will get Threebond 1194 at store. I buy it online. Never seen it in a store.

Check shipping cost. I can usually get a tube for $10 or under to my door. Last forever.

I just saw it on Bike bandit also on Amazon so thats what i will do right now I dont want to get to that point and not have the gasket material ready.
Now where do I get the seals and berings?any saw shop do? are there two berings?.and do you put in the seals first then slid in the crank ,.....Yea I guess that is what you do,.. and do you lube the crank shaft so it slides easily into the seals?

Online too. Ordertree is one. Order for Poulan 325. Gasket kit there too and then you will not need 1194.
