Wanted MS390/310/290
« on: February 02, 2014, 02:58:01 am »
Bought a saw a few weeks back to rebuild and thus have something to call my first. Upon receiving it I was disappointed to find that I jumped the gun and bid on somethin' that was junk. I'm no expert, but pretty sure the seller (fee-bay) took junk parts he found useless and threw em together and sold as something that was repairable. What he should've done was throw that crap in the trash. Not really, I'm just bitter; will take it as a lesson learned. I live in California and in my area not many people run larger cc saws, so they are few and far between at garage sales and near zilch on craigs. If I start buying parts here and there I'll be selling my first born in order to get all that I need. Also, if I just buy a runner from ebay I'm spending close to another 200 on the low end. No matter what road I take, I know I should've gone a whole different direction. So being in the boat that I'm in and knowing I'd still like to see this one to completion I am hoping that if I throw out a line I may get lucky. The saw I purchased was a Stihl MS390. If anyone out there has parts for a ms290, ms310, ms390 or any of the corresponding earlier models please message me. Ideally, there would be a saw that just needed minor replacement and cyl. swap keeping my cost reasonable. Have a feeling though that i'm gonna be getting the ringer. I thank you ahead of time for reading and/or inquiring.

The 390 has a separate motor unit. In other words - a clamshell saw. The 290 and 310 are of this same family.

You can buy aftermarket engine units many places rather cheaply.

What exactly is wrong with yours?

Don't feel too bad your not alone I've been had a time or two on Ebay.  I had a new OEM P&C for MS 290 so I bid on parts 290.  Supposed to have been non runner.  Ethanol ate the fuel line.  New line, filter and carb kit and I had a runner.  Won't tell you the "Other side of the story".

Buying a feebay saw  back many years ago is in a round about way responsible for me starting this site.  Said runs excellent. Yeah right.

Took saw to dealer for a look see being I was over my head at the time and est was $200+ repair needed. I searched and read and bought parts and repaired myself for $16.  $8 was parts $8 shipping.

Might want to look at one of those aftermarket 390 kits.

I've never bought a chain saw on Ebay that was exactly as described. I've been lucky and to repair them didn't cost me much though.

Thanks all for taking a moment to respond to earlier posts. Glad to see people involved with the forum. As to the question of what's wrong with it, my answer would be... what isn't wrong with it. To start with the handle isn't complete, and there is no carb or muffler. The flywheel and cover are missing, as well as clutch cover and clutch. Fuel and oil lines are garbage and the oiler is missing. Tore apart top end and found a seized piston and locked bearings and blown seals. Literally, I bought a gas tank as far as I can tell. Believe it doesn't leak but wouldn't be suprised if it did. I'm sure there is more that's wrong than I've mentioned and/or don't know about. Again thanks for your time and advice, input, stories,... etc. Have a good day all- Enjoy the game

This post brings up a important factor in buying from the Internet. Look at the Pictures and read what the Description has to say very carefully
