Red and silver maple are not like good old sugar maple, called rock in Canada .It burns but not that good. The lumber is soft .They were planted mostly as fast growing shade trees .The life of a silver is maybe 100 years .Most get hollow .Both sides of my 500 foot driveway have both silver and red planted around 1982 and they are already showing signs of decline. What few sugar maples are healthy as a horse.
