I'm not 100% certain it's Red Maple, I just tried to compare it to what I found on the Ga. forestry site. It is softwood for sure and this tree was probably basket ball size in the mid 80's when I built my shed. These trees grow wild here in my woods so I can get the wood most any time, don't know how the wood burns for heat but I've used it plenty in my smoker and a Pork roast cooked for bout 10-12 or so hours sure is mighty good.
