ODPE Repair Business
« on: November 10, 2013, 01:35:35 pm »
What do you guys do during the slow times to dig up some work? I opened a ODPE (outdoor power equipment) repair shop in June. Business has been up and down and now has just about stopped. I repair all ODPE including Outboard motors, Snowmobiles, and ATVS. I buy and sell used equipment. Looking for pointers. This may be in wrong area feel free to move.

I have noticed it's up and down too. But,  I just do it as a side hobby biz to feed my addiction of building my own for fun and firewood cutting etc.  So no biggie for me.
Has been times when I'm not working OT on my regular job and the used saw sells have filled  the gap of a repair or need though.  Even major rebuilds have came in on good timing to help also.

I pick and choose what I want to work on even. Like I turned down a 2 stroke snow blower a couple days ago.
Like doing chainsaws. I do take in trimmers, blowers and hedge trimmers etc in though.

I moved to OPE board because  it seems to fit better here maybe.  :-\

I do the same thing as Cut4Fun. I am retired and started this to keep myself busy, now it seems that this is all I have time for!

Do mostly chainsaws but some other stuff depending. I get lots of stuff in that is beyond reasonable cost to repair, and end up saving it. During the off months when I am not building custom saws, I sort through all the beyond repair stuff I have to see what can be made of it. Last year at this time I had 16 or so saws that were rebuilt out of parts that were ready to sell when the spring season got under way.

I also do a lot of work for tree companies and local governments, who store up all their non running stuff and bring me sometimes a pickup load of stuff to repair. They usually tell me to build up what I can and keep the rest, lots of really nice parts arrive in this manner.

Also in my area the local dealers are not of a mind to repair things, they would rather sell you something new especially if there is no warranty $ in the deal. I do a lot of the older Husqvarna and Stihl saws because people do not want to buy new because of the expense. So I am known locally for being able to repair things that dealers do not want to mess with.

For the pro cutters that are customers I have a standing deal that goes like this, during the off-season if you bring in your saws I will put in new ring and lines for a flat fee of $50 per saw. They eat it up! Sometimes I have 50 or more of these in here for that service.
