Wards/Remington
« on: November 18, 2011, 01:30:02 am »
Anyone have info on Remington saws? I have a Wards model TMC-24045-A and as near as I can tell from Mike Acres site it is either a Remington PL-55A or an SL-55A. The only difference I can find in the two is that the PL was introduced in 1967 and the SL in 1973. Anyone know the difference between an SL and a PL?
My Father-in-law bought this saw in the early '70's and I've been thinking about getting it going again, don't know why, we don't need it, it hasn't been run in at least 30 years. I remember it had so much compression that he made a bracket on a piece of 3/4" plywood to slip the saw into so he could stand on the plywood and pull the starter rope with both hands!

This is speculation on my point and based on only design .

It's a known fact that the basic design of the Homelite XL-12 was the most copied design of any saw ever made .That design found it's way to saws such as the Al-42 series Lombards ,one model of Poulan that I know of and one model of Remington I'm aware of .Plus countless others I can't remember the exact models or brands .

It was told to me by a saw dealer whos  experiance was about 50 years that the same design was used on a 5 cu in Remington and this might be that very saw .The time frame is about right being late 60's early 70's .This could be that missing link .

Let me again say this is only based on the  design and my wild guess so I'd take it with a grain of salt because I have no real proof .

More speculation .If that saw  was in fact copied from a Homelite or Lombard the Homey was about 3.5  cu in or something and the  Lombard  is 4.2 cu in .They both used a rather small starter drum and thus as the size increased with more cubic inchs it would natureally become harder to turn over .

On the later Lombards they installed a decomp and they also used the same pressuized tank auto oiling option as is indicated on Mikes site as  this Remington uses .In  addition it's reed valve plus the timing advance is 30 degrees exactly like the Lombard .

Thanks Al,
That XL-12 does look similar to the Remington in the photo, just rounded off a little more. The Lombard has a more squared off look to it like the Remington. I noticed the XL-12 used a 32:1 mix while the other two called for 16:1, other than that the specs are quite similar.
We did have a smaller remington in 1971 that was a good saw, I think that was why my FIL bought this one, though I think he bought it used.

If you take a peek in the thread on the Poulan GTG .I had posted a picture of the handle ends on a pair Lombards .See how that compairs to this Remington .I'd bet it's pretty close .

Now let me caution you on this .The Lombards for some reason were crank case seal leakers .I've got three in the shed that died from bad seals .My neighbor had an xl-12 that  met a similar fate .Probabley all do to old age but something to investigate if you're going to restore that thing .

Fact the two in the photo have bad seals .I'd about bet they are standard SAE sizes so it wouldn't or shouldn't be a problem finding replacements .Just another of my  ever increasing items on my "to do " list .

Al, Thanks for the tip on the crankcase seals. Don't know if I'll try to get this thing running or not. I've got several old saws that I've thought about selling on ebay for parts -- someday ???
Your photo of the Lombards do look a lot like the Remington. The Remington has the oil fill aimed to the back and up [tilt the nose of the saw down to fill], and it doesn't have the small tube from in front of the trigger to the base of the saw. Other than that they could be the same saw.

Those or the XL-12 are not exactly what you could call the same saw nor the Poulan .They are the same basic design .
