Today's Fun
« on: May 24, 2015, 11:54:52 pm »
Was over to a friend's house today with my older son and grand kids. The weather was 80 degrees and a bad case of severe clear with the wind light and variable.

The object was to take down a big almost dead black ash tree. It was dead but had a few leaves here and there.

It was some 26" - 28" DBH. I brought a pair of 7900's and a 5105. The friend had a 16" 025. My son brought his 45cc plastic Homelite but it never came out of the holster on the side of his Polaris Ranger. The 7900's had 24" bars with chisel chain. I had a 28" bar in the truck but we never put it on. The friend had his Kabota with a trailer that his dad used to haul the tops to the fire.

The tree and the 7900's were a pretty good match. When the ash dropped, the top limbs shattered like they were glass. So the big task was blocking up that big trunk. It was more of a big central trunk tree with no major branch offs. It was a wedge situation on every cut. I should have brought my cant hook and carrier but forgot. The guys had to use a bottle jack in one situation to roll the trunk over a little. There's a lot of bigger wood to set on now. It was nice to hear both those 7900's going at the same time.

So all the grand kids rode their bikes and scooters on the trail and roasted marshmallows on the limb fire. The old women set around and speculated.

I sharpened chains until I was blue in the face. If I had known there was a 2KW Honda there I would have brought my 511A grinder? My arms are tired from pushing the files. That dead wood works the chisel chains over in a hurry.

They finished early so they dropped a dead cherry too. It was only about 20" DBH. They were done with it in no time.

Sounds like some sawing fun. But that filing on the spot would have got old quick.   I carry extra chains ( if I have them ) and saws if I get into a big job like that.

What size bars were on the 7900's?

I know I wouldnt want to be filing a 32" etc on site unless had too.

The 7900's had 24's. The newer one had a Dolmar/Windsor (looked like a Power Match) bar and Windsor chain and the older one had a Power Match with RS chain.

I almost took the 660 and 066 instead. I have 16, 25, 32, and 36 setups for them.

Naturally I was in a dilemma for I could have taken a pair of 372's also?  But, the 7900's were great.

That dead wood made all the different saw's chains look like they were not getting enough oil? They were in buried cuts mostly. I was getting them after they were dull and making dust.

I forgot to mention that there was a MS250 there also but it wasn't taken out of the truck. The guy's 025 had old 16" RM2 green chain. Ugh! on filing down the safety tabs. He had a new RS chain but I'm one to wear out what is already on the saw.

The 5105/16" was a favorite for what was left of the limbs.
