Even if the coil design is different it should still fit into the saw with out modifying any covers.    I would see about getting a coil that fits correctly because it is possible you have been sent an incorrect coil.    Also make sure where the coil mounts is free of paint so it can be grounded good.   Then ohm out the metal part of the coil to the top of the cylinder and it should be 0 ohms.       

Trying to ohm out the new solid state coils is difficult because of the solid state devices and capacitors internal to it.   

I just hold the spark plug sideways on top of the cylinder and then pull the rope to see if I get a good spark.    I also use a business card for setting the air gap.
