2001 272XP
« on: June 18, 2015, 08:49:30 pm »
I hope everyone is doing well.  I picked up a clean 272xp from a retired small engine guy.  I enjoyed the conversation as that; he gave me a list of everything he had replaced, which was an extensive rebuild.  When we started the saw it had a good amount of noticeable torque.  I also got a speech about not listening to the manufacturer.  That I should run more oil that the recommended 50:1 for better lubrication and that  it runs cooler.  This saw came with a 20" b/c, but I am planning on running a 24".

I purchased a saw from one of the fellows on here.  When I can get it to start, it runs great.  That guy also told me to run more oil in the mix, as that it was tuned to that mixture.  So your thoughts on the mixture issue?
I get in trouble for looking at saws.  She thinks 6 is enough, for firewood and keeping the property trimmed. ( I really like this site )

Some saws can just be cankerous to start and you have to figure them out.  No way I would blame using 40 or even 32 ratio on your starting issue.  Just make sure you tune your saws to your mix.

You are 100% correct; I have not figured out the Deere.  Mainly because I rarely run it, and it has a lot of compression so my shoulder gives out before it gives in  :P .  That Deere is more of conversation piece in the garage, than one I really wanted to use regularly.  One of the boys works for John Deere and it's a fun saw to have around.  I really love it.

Back to the oil ratio; I was thinking to tune all my saws to 32:1 and the bearings get a healthier dose of oil too.  Am I wrong to make that assumption?

It's that Echo 4500 45cc in John Deere colors that you sold me sometime last year.  I have had a good time with that saw.

I run all my saws also 32 to 1.   I have a 272 and it gets the 32 to 1.    Heck I run it in my weed eaters too and do not have any excessive smoking or build up in spark arrestors.    Just make sure they are tuned right.

Listen to these guys.  There sterring you in the right direction.  ;) I run 40 :1 after I break-in a saw.  During break-in it gets 32:1 for a while.  My opinion is, when your running 50:1, you running to close to the ragged edge.  I even had a Stihl dealer to tell me once quote;  After the saw is out of warrenty, run at least 40 :1 if you want it to last.  Been doing it ever since, and have never had a crankcase failure of any kind.  Tune your saw to the mix, and mark your tank and date when each mix is made.  Keep the caps on tight esp. with E-gas.  Happy cutting  :)

32:1 with a good synthetic for me .... for ALL my two strokes, motorcycles included. On the large bore two strokes I ran 40:1 (CR500 & KX500).

Manufacturers must all recommend 50:1 because that is the only way the saws will remain in emmisions compliance. So their hands are tied in that respect.

I run all my stuff at 40:1, and use good premium non-ethanol fuel, which is even more important than the extra oil IMO. I realize that it's not available in all areas, but if you can get it, it's worth the effort.

The extra oil is particularly friendly to the bottom ends of the saws. I think there's more benefit to the bearings than the top ends. Especially on strato charged saws.

I run 32:1 for normal and 25:1 for milling.
