236 not idling well
« on: March 16, 2014, 03:00:37 pm »
Hi all,

I have recently noticed my 236e not idling well at all.  It is cutting well now,  after I got my sharpening sorted, and revving ok.  The problem comes when I stop cutting of after start up.  If I don't rev a little constantly the idle revs eventually reduce and then it cuts out.

I have noticed that there is oily type spray coming out of the exhaust and am wondering if it is running too rich and that is why the idling is off.  Also a timing issue maybe but not sure how to adjust the settings?

couple of pics of exhaust

thanks for the help in advance,

Graham

The timing is not adjustable but you can lean the low speed mixture some.

Try just a small amount at a time until you get it where you want it.

I have a T screw which I think is the idling speed and as you say, an H and L screw which are for the mixture.

How do I start off leaning it out and do I need to adjust both screws??

Thanks

Start off with the low speed screw and turn the screw in a clockwise rotation. You may need to adjust the t/idle screw as well for as you lean out the low speed your idle speed will increase. Not sure if your carb is independent or dependant of the high and low fuel circuits. You will know if the high speed needs adjustment by the sound of the engine. When adjusting the low speed if you make it to lean you will have poor throttle response. The high speed needs to 4 stroke a little at wot.

This may help you to understand the functions of the 3 adjuster screws.

What I mean by four stroking is that as the saw comes up to max rpm in will cut back a little and not scream. It will kind of fall off a bit in the sound. When you adjust the high speed turn the screw counter clockwise to make it richer and listen to the sound it makes the turn it clockwise to lean it back out and listen to how it revs higher and smoother, you want the saw to come up fast and smooth then have a flat spot at the top. I guess it is more or less the amount of fuel catches up to air flow and slows the motor back down.

Thanks,

it does seen to be dying at wot  a little.  starting seems to have been a blocked air filter but it is still reluctant to start.  Without the fabric air filter it starts fine which suggests that it is still blocked.  Bit confused tbh !!

Will persevere and hope I done make a complete arse of it.

Thanks for the advice,

Graham

I would've checked the muffler spark screen before doing any adjusting. ;)
