Slight smoke coming from power head
« on: February 01, 2015, 06:43:26 am »
I have a husky 394xp been chopping prepping for winter had the saw for over a month bought second hand from a mill. Paid bugger all, saw has been running brilliant 24" bar 3/8 ripping chain can't complain. How ever today was going solid through some dry ironbark and on my last cut the stalled. Didn't think much of it as it was the last cut placed the saw on the back of the ute and used my smaller saw to finish off. My wife noticed smoke coming from the power head on the pull cord side?? I pulled the saw apart and let it cool no more smoke now. Haven't tried starting it again come home and done some research. The chain is difficult to move with out the brake on so was wondering if this was a typical case of dumb dumb had the chain to tight this time around?? I did notice the saw was labouring a bit going through the log like it was wanting to stall where as other times I had used it, it went through like a hot knife through butter.
Sorry about the essay guys cheers for reading this much.

Make sure the brake band around the clutch drum is clean of grime and debris and not dragging

Pull the bar and chain off of the saw and make sure the sprocket nose on the bar is still moving freely.
Also check the clutch sprocket and make sure it is moving freely.
Look at the bottom or cutting side of the bar and see if there is discoloration from excessive heat.
Start the saw with the clutch cover off and bar off and see if it is pumping oil.

depends on where its coming from... check the fins, the spark arrester screen....take the recoil off and the clutch cover look for burnt areas... blow it all out while your in there..... good luck
