;D It was figuring out how to do it that took a few beers, not actually doing it!
Also it was a hot summer day, and those beers were far from the first ones that day - so my brain may not have worked very fast.....
Some of my best Redneck ideas are thought up after more then a few beers.
No surprice there, that's the way it usually happens! ;D

I got the clutch cover back on and reset the brake and this is what I did immediately afterwards....

Looks like it is working ok.

I found for me if just the brake is on when cover is off. To reset I just pull clutch and clutch drum off. Put cover back on saw and reset brake band. Then pull cover back off put clutch and drum back on.
That would take a little more time but would work even better.
Surely it will work, but my method from 2003 sounds like the fastest one, once you have it figured out.
There are still several roads that lead to Rome though! ;)

That would take a little more time but would work even better.

Thank you for all of the helpful advice gentlemen! Wasted the whole afternoon and I wasnt happy camper least bit. Must have cursed every bad word in the dictionary 100 times, neighbor was scratching his head wondering what I was soo mad about and wouldn't come over period, That c clip popped off and that put me into another realm of pissing and moaning. Home Depo got $ .25 cents out of me for another one and reinstalled the c clip but still couldn't figure out the spring thing a miggy to save my ass...
I think I might be able to manage it now... Great help and advise here. I'll be back for more stupid questions looking for a fix so stay tuned. This 455 Rancher has been the best investment I have ever made. Always starts 1st or 2nd pull, reliable, damn good saw. Bought it at Tractoir Supply and then bought another new one off Craigslist for $ 200.00 NIB and have never used it. I always buy 2 of everything cause I'm a little rough on my tools but this 455 Rancher I cant seem to tear it up....
I like the 455 also and have 2 myself.

I do this fix all the time at work. Set the saw on its side. Make sure the brake handle is forward. Take the clutch cover and put it in place as if you are going to put it on. Now at the top of the clutch cover push it in firmly and pull the brake handle back. It does not matter if the bottom of the cover sticks out some. That should open up the brake band for you.
If you look at the top of the clutch cover you can see where it engages the handle.
I can do this in about 2 minutes time and so can you.
The last one I did (350), I tried resetting it this way but I couldn't get it to catch the fingers enough to get it reset. I was probably doing something wrong? I bought the saw with the brake all torn up. Otherwise, it looked new.
I did the mistake of taking the clutch cover off my then new 353 with the brake on once in 2003 - and I used a large screwdriver and some force to push that "star" over, and release the brake. It took some beers to figure out how to do it! ;D

Lesson learned - never take the clutch cover off with the brake in the on position, on a saw with an outboard clutch.

Yep that is fun. Fixed a guys 455 that cam in with the spring that worked it's way out of the inside cover.
Just do like 660mag says. It will take more then 1 try and try your patience if you have my luck.

Some of us have been there before just like you. You need to mount the cover in the vice jaws protected by some rags so as not to scratch it.
Take a smaller Phillips and stick inside the spring and with both hands push the spring into place.
But the spring will not stay there without the cover/screws that go over it to hold it on.
There's more to the story . . .
In order to compress the spring you will need to "trip" the brake so the little links on the other end of the spring are buckled up. This will make the spring easier to get into the proper place.
When you get done, the cover will not go on the 455 because the brake is tripped and the band is too small.
I took the brake handle off the saw and reset the brake - then re-installed the lever and the cover. I think cut4fun used the handles of a pair of Channel-locs to re-**** the brake?

Just bought a new chain and was going to cut a dead tree down this morning... Went to Tractor Supply and got me a new blade and proceeded to install it. Well the metal band that goes around the clutch to stop the chain in case the chain pops off the chain bar was smaller diameter than the clutch assembly so the clutch cover would not mount properly/flush. I started looking at every thing and what needs to happen I think is the whole assembly needs to be straight as it is in the picture and the spring needs to be compressed to fit in he groove where it goes.
What has me stumped is how does one compress that spring ? I've given it everything I got, everything I can muster and still cant compress the spring slide it in the slot where it goes all at the same time.... Am I doing something wrong ? Gosh fellows help me here, I started at 12:30 and I've wasted my whole afternoon jacking with this... I drive a end dump dump truck and I'm a pretty good sized man and cant handle this small minor detail, I must be doing something wrong I dunno, I feel embarassed to take it to the lawnmower repair shop cause I cant do this chicken s_it minor detail and get my saw going and get wit it and cut this tree down.
