That would make sense. Good catch on IPL change in 2006. I seen it but didnt put it together.
My other 338 was 2005 and NE one was 2010.

Thinking the updated NE New Edition 338 started in 2010. Least the 2010 one I had was. New upgraded edition with increased compression ratio for more rapid acceleration and increased torque.
My 2010 had side tensioner. My older one didnt and was in crankcase.
I believe that happened late 2006 (and likely was the reason for the second 2006 IPL), at the same time as the NE339xp came out. My early 2007 one is a NE.

My 2007 338xpt California has a side tensioner.

Yep, the 335xpt was first, and the 334t was a "lesser" version of the 338xpt - no mystery there!
Then there was the 339xp and the 336 of course - but that's another story....

335 XPT (2001-05)
335 XPT California (2001-05)
334 T (2003-05)

After learning some new stuff on the last 338 in. I am wondering about the older saws in this series.
I noticed the 334 used the same intake boot etc, but 335 didnt ??? Which is older 334 335 ?
What is the difference in the husqvarna 335xpt and the 334t ? Educate me and others please.
