It looks like all of the saws really ran well.  I am still trying to figure out who built what saws, and what saws ran stock.

A couple after thoughts .I wish I had taken the time to help out a few but I was up to my azz in alligators with saw problems .

Danged old big saws sit all year and only get fired maybe twice the whole year .You think they're going to run but they seem to get fickle in the eleventh hour so to speak . >:(

I think I could have tuned those old reed valve Macs that one fellow had and possibley that red S-25 Poulan but I didn't want to seem like a wise azz so I didn't jump right in .

I kind of cut my eye teeth so to speak on reed valve Macs although their perfomance didn't show much that time .However at the next go round where ever that is if someone needs assistance I always have a screwdriver and am willing ,y'all just have to ask .Just the way I am . ;)

Very nice and thanks to the efforts of Mr and Mrs Poor and the fine hospitality as is always the case in that household and worthy of mention  .Thank you all kindly .

There was a nice collection of parts etc for sale  .I think Fred must have brought about a half a ton with him .I had head in butt else I'd have rounded up enough .404 by 063 chisel chain to make a 123 driver loop for the 084.

That aside I landed some neat stuff very reasonabley priced including the bones of an 042 Stihl which has parts as scarce as hens teeth .Now I can totally restore mine  to the point when it came out of the factory some 30 years ago . ;D

Thanks to everyone that came. Sure was alot of nice saws there. Even the vintage saws were awesome. Thanks to Kevin for keeping track of times and to Brad and anyone that took pics and video. What I do is only a small part of hosting a GTG. I've always been able to rely on you guys to complete the day.

Sometimes I have the worst luck.  :'(

I wanted that miracle wedge that old iron logging donated for the gtg drawing really  really bad. After lunch  I shook the box up good and had one of Bill's little kids reach in and pull out the winner.
Well I was shocked to say the least when I opened the card and it had my name on it. I felt a little awkward and bad about it so I said no, pull another name. So Andre aka andyshine is the winner of the miracle wedge.

Thanks Art for the very generous donation to the site and gtg give away.  8)

Sorry for misunderstanding you Fred.

When you told me to tell everyone you was selling out I read into it you were done with saws. You will find that cars take 125% more money then  saws.

Will be good to see you at the gtg again too.

I got hold of Fred aka stihlboy and he stated he was no longer into chainsaw stuff and was going to sale everything.

Guys this guy has tons of 084 stuff and 066 stuff.  I know he has one of the fastest woods ported 084's I have seen and it even won the SC Timberfest in the gas class.

Bought 4 more popular 8x8 cants today. Brings total to 21 cants + one round one. Actually I think the cotton is a pretty nice cant wood. At least it is a good use for an otherwise useless wood.
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG June 2
Post by: wkpoor on May 30, 2012, 09:58:16 pm
Something else I want to throw out there. I have 17 cants but at least 3 are of very low quality. And another 4 are odd sized (6x9).
If I call by 9am I can order up as many clear popular cants as I want and pick up tomorrow. 8x8s are 28.00. How many are interested in purchasing cants or purchasing any left over cants? As it stands now my best cants are cotton wood.
Also I have an almost perfectly round 20" bark free 15' long  cotton wood that could make a dandy big wood race cant if anyone has the bar and chain. There are 2 more bark free cotton woods similar also that can be for whatever.
So let me know if you can so I can decide by tomorrow on the cants.

About time I made another appearance. Just to remind everyone of a few details. If you haven't RSVP'd in a PM or other way please do so. My wife is on my case about the numbers cause she is doing the most important part.......the food! Also because I am expecting a rather large # I am charging 7 bucks for the meal. Don't boho because she usually goes all out. You won't go home hungry and there will be lots of desert.

For the guy that was wanting the oregon LG chain.

Here is the new off the reel CL square chain I told you I had. Just file round when needed and it will then be LG. All I ask is a new LGX or RSC chain in return. 3/8 050 60 or 72 no matter on that if you have one handy.  ;)

Went to the surgeon for follow-up from last weeks arteriogram and he wants to operate on the blockage in my femoral artery on the Tuesday before the GTG!!! (Why don't we have a crying emocon here?)
I know I won't be allowed to drive at all but might try to hitch a ride from one of the Cincy boys if I can travel at all.

I will definitely get up to Cincy with some of my saws so they can still make it even if I an homebound!
This is a real heart breaker but I've GOT to get this fixed.......my legs are my living!

Hope you can still hitch a ride and bring saws. There will be enough people to run your saws for you  ;D

I'll probably spend the day trying to get them started while you boys are having all the fun! >:(
Maybe one of you REAL saw mechanics will help me get them running like they do in drag racing!
I've seen more than once a guy loan a competetor a vital part, even up to and including a whole engine and then get beat by his own parts!
Now THAT'S sportsmanship!!!

Kind of the neat thing about this is it motivates me to get them all running again .

So far so good .The Clinton is the next antique to wrench on .It's got to be the carb, won't pump for some reason .Can't be much .--well on second thought I've said that before and took the carbs apart 4-5 times before I get them ---

Danged old saws sit for 20 years and regardless if you rebuild the carbs stuff has found its' way into the tank or something to come back and haunt you after the fact .

Antiques are not for the impatient .I've had to just walk away more than once before I took a hammer to them .

I tried it both ways and it finds my house exact. Even puts the flag right on my driveway. The drive is long enough it shows it as a road.

Actually I do live on Sixteenth Rd Sw. Most people just abbreviate it 16th. No other road around here though that is 16th. I'll google me up to see what up both ways.

I was looking for Bill's house on Google tonight and there is a confusing situation when using Google Maps.

Bill lives on 16th Rd SW which also happens to be county Hwy 12.  This is on US 22 about a mile South of Amanda and only goes to the South off US 22. It is actually the first road to the South from US 22 on the West side of Amanda.

If you enter Bill's address, Google will likely suggest County Hwy 16 which is the road that goes North out of Amanda. It is close enough to be confusing? A key to the fact that you did something wrong is that the icon will place you at the intersection of county Hwy 16 and US 22 and there is no house there.

Don't let Google fool you.

Also Bill's road is 16th Rd SW and not Sixteenth Rd.

Pmc against ps which I guess means pico super or chisel .

He tried to con me into whatever that number is for carbide .I suppose that might be okay for those who have no idea how to or are too lazy to use a file .

The dealer agreed it would not be as fast as standard semi chisel .I had no interest so I didn't even price it .

I trucked on down to the dealer this morning and picked up two new 3/8" pico chains to test the semi chisel against the chisel using a stock 200T .

I was surprised to find out that chain was not much more than an Oregon of the same driver count .

Sweet. Will be some smoking fast cut times.

I've raced in pine at Chardon before when they had it. They run whatever is donated from the mill. Usually its poplar and has been pine here lately.

They did cut rather easy so I'm pretty sure they are Cotton wood.
May have found the pine for the cants. Earl is getting a new electric line this summer and South Central Power will be taking down several trees. Guess I'll be doing that for them early.

If it's soft it's cotton wood ,hard it's ash .

I suppose I've got 5-6000 bd ft laying in logs of ash myself .At least that much still dead standing .
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG June 2
Post by: wkpoor on April 15, 2012, 12:22:02 am
Actually Al I think that is all cotton wood. Infinite amount still left behind where I got that. But the key word is think, don't know for sure. If those are ash they should be headed for the mill.

Geeze though we keep coming up with ideas poor old Bill will have to order a semi full of cants  .On the other hand he could heat his house all winter on the cookies .No splitting ,easy to handle . ;D

Talked to Bill last night. Vintage class is on.  8) 8) 8)

Lets try and keep it to 70's and older saws.  I'm just going to run that echo 702 71cc with 8T. Bill said something about a  Homie XL for his.

Yeah they got a little hard too after they sat for a spell .Not as hard as that Indiana shag bark though ,mercy was that stuff tough .

Nohing however on this planet could possible be as hard as that beech log where you and I first met some time back .That son of a brick was petrified as hard as granite. Dulled every thing that attacked it . When a Mac 125 or a Stihl 090 grunts going through a log you know darned well it's a tough one .

Going to throw this out there at you all going to this gtg and to Bill wkpoor.

At my gtg's I used to have a vintage class. Run any cc size saw with any chain as long as they were 1979 or 1977 or 1970 and older.  I always used 1979. The others were some other real races used for dates.

Say you had a saw dated 1982 but its production run started in 1978 you were good to go.
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG June 2
Post by: rms61moparman on April 09, 2012, 09:50:55 pm

Well I already know that I'm not worth a damn on the cants, so maybe a buried 20 in a log would be more "up my alley"!
I surely couldn't be any worse. :-[

It's kind of neat whatever size the saw is to see it in action like it would be a day in the woods .Cants are neat for a speed run but really that doesn't tell the whole tale . You know on that some of those cookies cutters could get er done and some could not ,depends .

So then in addition to those Husqvarnas would an 038Av be out of the question ?It is 61 cc maybe a tad over ?

I was just throwing out suggestions for some other stuff to do Al.  I havent even talked with Bill for awhile now to ask about it.

I wouldnt see why a 038 61cc couldnt play if we had a side play off area.

I kind of like that buried to the bone cut on bigger wood .I never could get one to really cut good over the cants but in the torque department --maybe .

I just muffler modded the other 45cc one today. What a difference just that made.   (no cut times to back it up, but seat of the pants feel in the cut from stock to  ported with stock muffler to ported with MM  ;D ;D.  Think I am just going to leave the 346 carb on this one (even though I found a 199 and 175 )

I'm going to get both a new semi and a new chisel and if nothing else test them out  like we talked about . If there's like a foot of cant left and somebody can take a vid and time them that's all we need .Stocker on this .

Now providing the super bee behaves itself with the "right " chain  ;)   it will hang tough with the average 3 cuber .It wouldn't stand much of a chance I don't think  against a hot runner though .

What the hey it's all in fun any way .If nothing else it will show what a bumble bee can be made to do win, loose or draw . ;D
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG
Post by: Cut4fun on March 02, 2012, 03:07:54 pm
Thats another class super bee's that has been getting lost in the shuffle. Probably going to have to combine the 2 to get a few saws to run in the 0-40cc class, even though it isnt fair to the top handle saws.

Heck all I got is a 33cc poulan and 40cc solo top handle that a stock 200T will eat alive.  :P

IF I even make some cuts all I have is stock saws and work chains now. Except for 45cc and 49cc 3ci class, work chains isnt going to do them any good though.

What do you guys think of a catered in food at $5 to $7 a head depending how many show up.

Also we need to help with cant purchase etc when the hat is passed.

I know my last GTG I had around $500 in food and cants and It's hard for just 1 guy to eat all that cost as I did last time.

Only alky I know of now is Ed and the other guys that cant make the trip.

There is a bunch of gas racesaws out there now too.  You can  tell those right off, just pop  a cover and see a 066 carb or HL on a 346 or 365  ;).

I would to see some alkys show because that might make some more people come if for nothing but to see some fast saws run.

Thats what they did at Medina county fair  Bill, set up race classes at the fair.  See what was there and then make final say on saw classes.
I say just run gas and final say at gtg.

If alky and pipe saws show run them too just keep times separated.

That sounds like a plan to me.  ;)

You think some of this could be sorted out after we see who actually shows and what saws want to race. Kevin you probably have a better feel for what might come from the other sites.
If some guys want to do a build off I like that but I won't be able to provide the saws, sorry.

You know you were talking about guys running the 372 on the 365 and 7900 on the 6400. Same can be said for the guys with 281 with 288 tops and 7900 with 84cc BB tops etc.

Kevin , its just like the old saying goes , Donot bring a stick to a gun fight so this is why I'm asking , if  everything is woodsported that is great and I like that idea as it makes more fun for everyone

Ed I just read Bill said run what you brung for this year. We can run them all together or break them up to alky and gas. Dont matter it is all for fun.
Ed you would be the only guy left coming that I know of that would have alky now.

Lets throw this out there.

muffler gas any mixture
0-40cc
0-51cc or 49cc 3ci
0-60cc or 65cc 4ci
0-81cc or 80cc
0-100cc
100+

Piped and alky saws can  run in class but wont get credit for beating the class. I know my 5000 was 30% faster in 1 cut times with pipe and faster by a couple tenths on muffler run on alky/nitro.

Also we have always allowed smaller cc to run in bigger cc classes. So a 066 can run in 0-100 and then 100+
, 346 run in 0-51cc and then 0-60cc etc.  Not all guys got saws for all classes and sometimes I just liked to run my smaller saws against my bigger saws to see.
I dont have saws anymore so it dont matter to me what you guys decide. I only have 2 3ci works saws left ported, 45cc 346 and redmax 5000.

Kevin I'm just asking cause you should know if there is a way to break the rules most chainsaw guys know how to do it , are these muffler saws or can you run a pipe in these classes and 40 cc or bigger , so by the sounds of it these are pretty much full racesaws just not on alcohol,

Only 1 racesaw have ever been run at Bill's, only mine a Partner 5000 on gas no head.

At Bill's it has always been just WORK saws. Pipes (like jeepers 346 piped) ran with the muffler saws but was not counted for class. There never is enough piped saws to have classes here.

Bill's place is woods ported work saws on any gas ****tail  people run. Seen it all there and the guys running the nitro, nitropane and exotic high end race gasses you still have to flush, usually had their saws tuned wrong so it didnt matter anyway and got beat by just 93 octane pump gas.

Bill , 2 cuts is pretty safe and easier on wood than 3 cuts but its your sand box so we do what you want  and when we get closer to the show just let us know what you need money for the cants , I have put alot of GTGs together and know about the wood . I kind of think we need some kind of limits on what we bring cause if not it will be piped alcohol saws all the way and that is nice to see but not very easy to compare saws with .
Are you going to have any kind of a saw build for your GTG, I know I would be up for something like a 562 build off as that is the way pretty much everything now is going so might as well figure it out but I would think keep this a worksaw so more people could join in

Kevin I by all means hope you can make it. I put that date out there on a whim. I'm still flexible and want to make this a rally good GTG. Feel free to act as my agent on other sites to promote it.

Hey guys bring it all. I want to see fast saws and I don't care what your burnin and or piped. Like Kevin said its a run what ya brung. This is mostly for fun and we can always break down classes differently depending on what shows. I'm for the 2 cut since alot people probably don't practice all that much. 2 cut may make abetter show for the most of us. Now if some people come that race alot and what to do their three cut class hey thats good to.

Just so you know Bill 2 more racers from another site with fast saws cant make that date either. They said to pass on to have fun and maybe next time.

It would mean back to back weekend very long drives to Webster then to GTG.

Post by: Cut4fun . on February 11, 2012, 08:30:47 pm
Ed I'm going to let Bill make that decision being it is his gtg.  There is no need to be running cheater saws and I know what you are getting at.  ;)

The BB361 got sold after that GTG, it couldnt beat the 56.5cc 357's me and Bill had.  :D

At my gtg's it was run what you brung gas saws with any mixtures. IF someone thought you was running a cheater saw they could ask for a bore and stroke check. Ours was friendly and everyone knew what most of our saws were.

Somewhere in 1st page was a rough class break down of his 2010 gtg classes.

just so I know your rules , what are they  and what cc per class, what fuel? so I know what to bring , the 0-65 cc class sure can open up a can of worms as then you got 365's, 6400's and saws like that , does any one check to see if they are running the proper jug on these saws , In my small mind just keep it at 60cc and let the 361 big bores run any ways cause the big bore does not make any more power than what can come from the OEM stuff , just saying  thats all

Bring her along Kevin. You won't let a little thing like an aniversery stop a GTG would ya?

LOL your real funny LOL  ;) at that rate I wouldnt see another 17 asking something like that. You have to remember I have raced at county fairs, street  fairs, all kinds of festivals in state and out of state and not once has that made her anymore interested in watching chainsaw cut wood.  :D :D

I wasn't at the last one but time before they got to cutting the cants a little too early on .Fact we ran the 80 cc in 10 by's I think because they cut up all the 8 by 8's prematurely .No big deal I guess ,stuff happens . :)
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG
Post by: wkpoor on February 09, 2012, 01:38:42 pm
Got a call in today to a local guy to see about cutting them. Used the Amish last time. Since I have plenty of time I might be able to source my own logs and have them milled local. I do have mills right down the road a few miles. So lots of options local. I was thinking 2 cuts like you said unless this gets more serious. I would like to have at least 6ea of both sizes.
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG
Post by: Cut4fun . on February 08, 2012, 03:40:10 pm
Bill are you going to do 2 cuts for all classed this year?  That would be 4" of wood per saw run. Well for most of us it would be, some take 6" per cookie.  :D

Depending how big of a turn out you have. I used to do 3 cuts and get 4-6 8 and 4-5 10 . You wont need that much IMO.

The last cants I bought were $25 for 8x8x8' and in the $40 range for 10x10x8' I use Rick Hawkins lumber and he is southeast of me about a hour and half. So he should be about 30mins to 45mins NE of you. He and his family are racers so he will know what kind of cants you will want.

I would guess depending on turn out. up to 3 8x8 4 classes and 2 10x10 3 classes.

Just take and lay them on a tarp and then wrap or cover them with a tarp and out of the sun.

Ha cants .I remember one of the first GTG's I went to was early in the fall .Late cut cotton wood just full of water . Those danged cants were as  heavy as oak .About like cutting into a big sponge ,water just flew .

I filed a couple race chains and all I had soft to test them in was half cry tulip poplar ,ooh wee cut like a million bucks .Proud as   peafowl so off I went .In that water logged cotton wood I think they might have done better had I put them on backwards . :D
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG
Post by: wkpoor on February 08, 2012, 08:51:30 am
If I remember right I want to wait till about 2wks before the race to have the cants milled so they are still soft. Maybe even closer like a week. And then keep them covered or our of the sun so they stay true. Or do they just keep them wet. As we get closer I'll need some guidance as to how many will be needed.

if its late enough in the year I would be up for a GTG , just early in the spring I have zero time trying to get everything ready for the start of the racing season and with STS series being early again this year it evens makes it a bit tougher to have everything ready

I haven't been to all of them but as I recall only at TT's and at Pa. did we ever run just a top handle class  .First shot was at TT's there were only a few of us then a lot of others came on board as time progressed .They got faster too .

Ha it's about the only class I do any good at . ;D
Title: Re: Central Ohio Spring GTG
Post by: Cut4fun . on February 04, 2012, 11:09:43 am
In the past it was

0-40 or so and  top handles had run in same class at his

0-60 and went to 0-65cc 2010 to let a BB361 in and might need to to let 365's in now. Bill's call.

0-80 or 81

0-100

unlimited

I would  have a bumble bee class for top handles only. Then -0-40 or 42cc for rear handles.  3.1ci 4ci 5ci 6ci unlimited if it were me. Like I said Bill's call.

Would be nice to have enough wood in 8x8 to do 2 cuts this year in the smallest classes up to the 51cc.  2010 up to 51cc was all 1 cut and then 4ci and up was 2 cuts.

It's pretty much the center of the state so it's not a bad drive from northern KY ,Indiana,Pa etc .

Geeze Kevin and I went to south Indiana once in a beat up Ranger with a bad tranny and enough saws to make us look like a traveling flea market .

More towards spring woud certainly be better than mid winter especially Ohio winter where the weather can change in half a day .Nice sunny morning then azz deep in snow by 6 PM .Humbug .

Talked to Bill wkpoor last night on the phone and he gave the OK to pass his GTG info out to those interested.

((( I've got the bug to hold another GTG only this time in warmer weather. So I'm posting for a show of hands for anyone interested in a late May date. Somewhere near Memorial day was my thoughts. It will be pretty much like my others with 8x8 and 10x10 inch racing cants and a variety of rounds to cut on. 1 Day event with gathering about 9AM, general cutting and bs, lunch about noonish, and racing in the afternoon. )))   Amanda, OH

I have been to his last 3 GTG's and Bill puts on a good one. Usually hotstart over wood and 1 cut smaller saws to 2c uts depending on amount of wood.

I plan on going and told him I would run the racing portion for him if he liked.

Just putting in the tentative date in heading and post for you Bill. June 2
