One a guy in my group that ran 346's and had tons of them.
I traded him his first echo 50cc to try that I had new and really no need for it here. To try stock, then stock type mods you do and then he ported it next.
He likes those A2 set ups with big filters too.
He has been selling off all his 346's since then.
Pic not the one I traded him. I traded a 4910.

Just finishing up the simple but free mods for gains on the stock but muffler modded echo 501’s. Joe showed on dyno in past. .24hp gains just in the air horn itself.
I been running o-rings in my echos for over 2 years on the ported 490 one and never a fine by since. Another pretty much free mod.
Shorter time on the 2 501’s but same results.
Joe 4910 stock dyno testing steps. = his stock 4910 was 3.64 which was hair higher then the norm.
With the air horn mod he showed same saw going to 3.88.

Joe's dyno runs step by step gains on the echo 501 4910. Stock with just air horn mod. 2 muffler mod. 3 adding the cnc deflector. 4 pipe. 5 a woods ported with muffler

Me give me the lightest as used one.

I see no difference really in fit with your sae ones. They work perfectly. Just like mm ones
Plus their only like 4 cents compared to 7 cents when bought at oring site .
Oring I had cut and super glued for use too. Brown one.

Echo 501 4910, Husky 550, Stihl 261 all woods ported by Joe and checked on dyno. Sheets below.
PHO but both tanks filled up and weighed by Joe. 550 13lbs 5.9oz, 261 12lbs 6.5oz, 501 4910 11lbs 14.7oz
Then figure in cost of each to begin with. IMO why alot of folks going the echo route.
-
Muffler modded echo 501 4910 will see gains of 18% 20% 22% give or take plus from it in cut times.
Add woods ported port work with that you can see another 20% 23% 25% gain in cut times.
Just going by some testing done by a guy testing stock, muffler modded, ported.
-
Echo 501 #2 cleaned and ready to test.
In the rain it looks like. SMH
Less then 2 mins to use this Oregon K095 bar. Now to see if oils good. Appears it is lined up just like K216
K095 oils great no adjustments needed for that
-
To me there is no reason to buy those cnc muffler deflectors for echo 501 4910 490 500.
But that is me. Easy peasy.
Toss that inner piece with tiny pipe.
-
Dang what a goodie bag that came with saw. :o 8)
-
Modded echo 501 dyno sheet done by Gary. Stock and ported a couple of them.
-
New used echo 501 showed up from tx.
No brainer time. 5mins for this. How they come stock. Take that BS and pull it out easy to do and toss in a bin.
Do not turn it around and stick out like a we little pipe  . Defeats the whole purpose of removing it.
Now look at that free muffler mod under there.
Then open the front of that deflector up and your good to go for free no cost.
-
My FB chainsaw repair group. No time to think there just pulled the trigger on another echo 501 🤦♂️
Being shipped from TX. Poor saw going to freeze up here. :D

Some guy said the metal handle was heavier then the plastic handle and he can feel it in the handles. Really?
I just happen to have both. ;)
Not only does the 501 aluminum handle with thick rubber coating have less vibration then the 4910 490 cheap plastic handle.
It actually weighs less too just by a hair. 😲
Say what? ::) :D
-
I despise the plastic handles on any saw myself. IMHO they vibrate more.
Compared my metal handle 501 with thick rubber coating to plastic handle one like on 4910 490.
Another guy with 590 620 noticed same thing and swapped handles on saws to see. He said metal handle on 590 also vibrated less then the cheap plastic handle. 620 with the plastic handle then vibrated more to him, testing.
Echo 4910 with the vibrating plastic handles. Here is what Corey did to go 572 metal full wrap on his tester back in the day. He stated as soon as went metal with rubber coating vibrations were lot less.
I have noticed the difference in my 501 with aluminum handle and thick rubber coating compared to my plastic handle one.
Not that I need a FW on 50cc but 50 buck for 501 half wrap new.
Buy a whole dang 572 kit for the price on a 501 handle too.
Clutch cover, handle, west coast spikes etc etc. Crazy good price
-
Echo 501 service date torque specs carb specs etc etc all specifications
-
Old paper specs.
OE 45cc 3.4hp at 9600rpm max rpm 14700
NE 50cc 3.7hp at 9600rpm max rpm 14100
501 50cc 3.45hp after converting specs and max 14000
Their mufflers are a huge restriction but easily removed from it. Then open outer deflector

Guy in Europe posted this awhile back.
I found only a few differences between p / SX versions...
501
- carburetor: A021004570 / A021-004410
- handle: C040000850 / C040-000830 (both aluminium and the same shape, maybe different rubber?)
- air filter: A226001090 / A226-001580 (both look quite the same, maybe different piece only because of the carb?)
- bar: hard / replaceable sprocket nose

Joe selling one of his echo 4910 builds on FB and listed on his website for porting services. Firewood woods ported or gtg race fun. Same cylinder etc as 501.
Pic of cylinder and dyno run.

Was dealing with roof repair for 2 days. So today I can get back into the saws.
Got the deflector on echo 501 to where I wanted it.
My whole reason for what I am doing is trying to keep the hot exhaust from blowing out the sides and melting brake handle.
Just using the oem deflector again 4910 501 490.
Just like 590 620 there is no reason for those pricey aftermarket cnc ones unless just being to lazy to do yourself.
This saw is easiest dang saw to start. 1 pull cold pops and 2 afterwords.
No clue why decomp as never used it on this. Maybe for folks with shoulder issues or once ported.

More pics and testing and retune to turn down a bit even thought wot 13k-14k in service manual. Was 13.2k after muffler mod but went with 12.6k for long run.
Like standard cover 501 over the spring assist on 490.
But understand why some folks need those.
Love the feel of the rubber grip metal handle over the plastic handle big time.
All the 490 needed to stop fines from getting by. So all the 501 is getting too. 272 o-ring fix Corey Corp found to work on his 4910 way back.
Psi check. Good like it felt. 8)

Just some of my thoughts on 501 after picking up yesterday.
I knew someday one would turn up to buy right and used. Echo 501 bought PHO.
Which didn’t matter as I have all of that on hand.
Psi felt good and popped on choke all I cared about.
If good I can test one stock now then muffler modded to see.
The metal handle with rubber coating feels so much better then the plastic handles the cheaper version echo use.
Wish their better one came with mag clutch covers over plastic.
Mixed about those captive bar nuts.
Like the standard recoil better then the spring assisted one like on 490.
Quick muffler mod for no cost.
Also own a hacked ported echo 490 with plastic handle been using for a few years now.
Here is what I noticed yesterday to see how it was stock with epa caps on.
Tune on it was fat. L and H was. Idle wasnt even hitting 2k and checking wot was 11's.
Without pulling plastic epa stops I wanted to see where she would go on tune. L leaned perfect. H would tune to 12.6K before hitting stop. Now Idle is around 2700. I still havent even had to touch I. L was just to fat IMO. Crisp throttle now no lag etc.
Not touching tune. Pulling that inner pipe and screen and opening exits on deflector and just a gill in front of deflector. = Just doing that alone it showed about 300 more rpm on idle and wot throttle 13.2K without touching tune.
-
Jmo the metal top handle and rubber grip on these are worth the difference. Better feel to me the the echo plastic handle one I been using for years for my small saw.
Sort of wish the clutch cover was mag though.
-
Cheap free muffler mod to free up the echo some. Toss that inner pipe and screen. Open sides up and added a front gill.
If wanted bigger I think the 490 has a 3/4 or 7/8 pipe in its muffler.
Pencil hand piece I bought from Shaun Carr many years ago still going strong.
Just doing that alone it showed about 300 more rpm on idle and wot throttle 13.2K
Might have to come up with better deflector.
-
Threw the 18 I took off 490 on it.
Starts easy and runs cuts.

Hopefully turns out to be good to go.
