Title: Stihl 034
Post by: Cut4fun on July 05, 2012, 05:32:19 pm
Something I have been wondering. How does a stock stihl 034 match up to a stock husky 357? How do they compare in the cut etc?

Just looking at paper specs. Any real world numbers and feedback?

Yes Sawtroll we know the PHO weight of the 357 was more  ;D.   I'm guessing the weight on the 034 PHO cant be right either, being what the 036 PHO weight was.

034    56.5cc 11.6lbs 13,500 34mm stroke  46mm bore

357  56.5cc    12.1lbs    14,000    34mm stroke  46mm bore

I was thinking how the 036 impressed me stock and it got me wondering about the 034 how it performed. Only 034 I have had, had a 036 topend too.

I'd imagine if that thing would have had some soup put to it it could have done just dandy .

You remember the one the gent from Pa had at that GTG that Klick reworked .Now that thing had some grunt for 60 cc's .Klick evidently left the exhaust long because it wasn't a screamer but my Lawd was it a puller .

The 034 compares more closely with the 359. The 357 is more similar to the 036. The 034/036 are in the 12.25lb range. 357/359's are right at 13lbs.

Thanks for info. I have been fighting the urge to pick up a clean 034 (dont feel like driving that far again to where I picked the Mac 805 up at).

Also just passed on a stihl 361 for $275 20 mins down the road.

Just loosing interest in this with all the heat.  :-\

Yeah  heat ,I know what you mean .Had it not been for the storm damage I certainly would not have fired those saw up the last 3-4-5 days .

I'm more inclined under these conditions to relax under the big umblella on the patio in the late afternoon and have a few brews . Those saws will be there once I get the motivation I'm sure . ;)

In my opinion if there was ever a one saw plan, the 034/036 would be a ideal saw. 16 inch bar.....look out. 20 inch if needed... it will handle it fine. However, the last 034 I worked on , need a airfilter and it was no longer available thru stihl. The 034's with the factory tilliston carbs can be made very good runners. VERY RELIABLE! Run em', bring them home and blow off the airfilters----good to go!

I have only run a stock 359 with a 18 inch bar and 3/8 chain and I would rather have a 036/360. But it's just a matter of opinion. I will put money on swap a chain on a 034/036 vs. chain on 357/359, I can do two stihls. Something about the inboard clutch that make it tougher???? Once again...its just matter of opinion.

I got a brand new OEM filter that went on the 034 Kevin got .The filter Baileys said would fit did not .Surprisingly the OEM from a dealer was a couple bucks cheaper .

Al, your dealer must of had it instock from back in the day. Medcat shows a filter number but had did not match oem.

Let me add, one saw plan, is a wood cutter. Not a tree faller or timber cutter.

orderd one last week for another saw, had to wait 3 days for it to come in.

edit: you have to order the 2 halves seperatly :D
