Title: Removing The left upper rear AV spring from the tank on the 362/365/372 family
Post by: 660magnum on September 23, 2012, 10:49:19 pm
The other day I was taking the springs from a 372 tank. The front spring came off easily but the rear one would not budge.

I had a pair of Vice Grips with round jaws for pipe and I could put a half turn on the spring and it would not come off.

The design of the tank keeps you from turning it more.

I took a punch and banged on the end of the spring that is against the tank and the spring still would not move.

So I put all the unwrap pressure I could with the Vice Grips from the outer end while I banged on the end at the tank with the 1/4" punch and hammer.

"Bang" - It came loose.

The front spring had a black insert and the rear spring had a medium blue insert.

When removing the tank, don't forget to remove the travel limiter pin from the clutch area?

can you not put an allen wrench through the end of the spring to reach the bolt? or is this different?

If it had locktight on it a little heat helps.   Steve

This spring threads onto a plastic boss that is molded into the plastic. The spring coils sort of stretch on the threads and it locks it in place. The spring with the internal bolt is the one between the top handle and the cylinder.

Husqvarna sells a special wrench that fits in among one side of the coils to remove these but on this one, I think, you would have still needed a little nudging with the hammer and punch while the Vice Grips or special wrench had the coils of the spring unwound a bit.

The spring itself is threaded on a plastic bolt that hold spring on tank.
NO Heat! It is a bad idea...

If it is really stuck remove tank completely so you get better room to hold as you turn.
I never needed any special tools for these yet..

+1 - agreed

The wrench they sell has a tab on the end that catches the end of the spring. The tab does not show up in that picture.

With all the 362 365 372 I have redone I have never used a special tool for anything. Never had to use anything speical to remove the springs on tanks to replace etc.  I even got to where I could split cases and have crankshafts removed in 30mins.
