Title: O Rings On Gas/Oil Caps On Chainsaws
Post by: davbell22602 on December 21, 2012, 11:52:57 am
Has anybody ever tried just replacing the oring on the caps instead buying all new cap assy? I have hardware store nearby that sells orings.

I've done it on many brands when they have the O or Flat style rings.

I matched some up at hardware store. Some you can by just the ring from the brands maker online or local dealer too.

I've done several myself .As far as the o-rings I have nearly an unlimited assortment where I work ,literally thousands .

The reason the Stihl flippys get contankerious is because the ethanol in the gasoline swells the rings up .The rings probabley can be bought through Stihl rather than a complete cap. Funny a 200T fuel flip cap is about 8 bucks at a dealer but for some reason they try to peddle them for 12 plus shipping on flea bay .Nice profit margin if you can get it .

I've bought just the O-rings for gas and oil caps at the Husqvarna dealer but they are like $2.87 ea plus shipping.

I just bought the oring I need for the gas cap for .28 cents at the local hardware. I put it on and have no issues with it leaking gas. I also bought another one for .32 cents. They too much alike so I bought them both.

I wonder if the hardware store o-rings are the old rubber style that doesn't stand up to ethanol, or if they are one of the newer compounds?

Get the  viton orings and not nitril or neoprene which is normally stocked  hardware store/car parts .
I don't have a sthil saw but the local guy says he routinely exchanges or gives (free) new flippy caps to guys that have older sthil saws with swollen orings.

On poulans not only do the orings get screwed up , but the caps them selves get swollen from the E-10. You have to buy a new cap/ring and wash it and swap it out ever now and then since it will "recover" if left to "air out" for a year. I've gotten a few for friends for some of the old (early 90"s) 2150's that I have worked on.
