Title: Metal gas cans
Post by: Cut4fun . on December 24, 2012, 01:24:16 pm
Came across a older metal gas can this week.

Havent seen one like this for awhile.   I think 660mag brings another type metal gas can for his mix.

So whats everyone use?  I mix in 5gal plastic and break it down to the 2gal 2.5gal and 1 gal plastics.  Might have to work this metal can into the mix.

I'll get a pic of the metal one in a bit.

No non ethanol fuel around here so it is true fuel for me.  Not doing that much cutting to mix alot anyways.  That will change though in about 6 months and I have a 5 gal metal gas can, and will continue to use my empty true fuel cans that I have save up.  They are a handy size.

I do have a collection of empty metal paint thinner and acetone cans  I've kept just in case I get the bright idea to dabble in rocket fuel .So far I've refrained from the temptation .

Many years ago those one gallon cans are what I used when all I had was a Poulan S-25 .You couldn't run a gallon of fuel through one of those unless you  ran  it about 12 hours straight .Actually they are kind of a pain in the neck with no pour spout you about need to carry a little funnel .Which of course gets covered with saw chips no matter where you put it .

Didn't realize they still made 5gal metal cans. Funnel part nit included.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Protectoseal-Safety-Gas-Can-5-Gallon-Red-Metal-4615C-CAN-ONLY-/270992638653?pt=US_Outdoor_Power_Equipment&hash=item3f186b82bd

Plenty still out there on the re-sale market.   :o    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313&_nkw=metal+gas+can&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Those 1 gallon tall rectangle metal cans. I remember dad giving me a quarter to go get lawnmower gas with.  Walk to the station and back when 6-7 years old guessing.

I probabley have at least a dozen of the military style 5 gallon cans but only one of the round type .I prefer the later which is an "old iron sides " made in Delphos Ohio .

They got on that OSHA kick several years ago and made such a fool proof can that fools like me can't hardly get the gas in or out of them .What prompted all that nonsense I have no idea but instead of spill proof you slosh more gas around trying to open the lid than you normally would do on just a standard old can which is not standard any more it seems .Why did they have to take something as simple as a gas can and make it complicated and expensive to boot .

Probably used the same stihl flippy cap engineers to come up with the new gas cans. Take a simple screw on/off oil and fuel cap and turn it into a bunch of different pieces of plastic.   :D ::) ;D

Nobody except another German could ever figure out why Stihl does anything .And even if they most likely would not agree with it .Why in the world did any of them remove the thumb oiler ?Probabley so they could sell more bars and chains is all I can come up with .

I picked up a echo 4500 in JD yellow 450V and it is 45cc and runs like a OE 346xp 45cc. Thing has the manual thumb oiler with auto oiler.  Never seen one on such a small cc saw.

I have a 5 gallon and a 2 gallon metal cans from the early 70's that I use.

I also have several of the current design plastic one gallon cans with the OSHA junk removed. A B&S tank cap fits perfect.

The small Skilsaw 1610/1616 range have both manual/auto oilers & they are only 32cc ish

The S-25 Poulans had a thumber in addition to the automatic .Those things would really squirt the oil .

Oh I'm just complaining because most times the auto oilers do okay .It's just some times an extra squirt would be nice .Like stumping which is my least favorite use of a chainsaw .

What misery that is .Trying to guide 32-36 inchs of bar about 2 inchs above the ground without kissing the dirt and up to your knees in chips .No matter how much power you have the chain fills full of chips ,the saw runs hot .You're about light headed from breathing exhaust fumes .It just plain sucks with a half life is all I can say .---mumble grumble ---
