Title: Husqvarna 357XP
Post by: William Greene on January 12, 2013, 09:04:34 am
i asked the customer..."did it stop in the cut?"....he say's YES!

i ask this question,every time the customer want's a "tune-up"    ::)

i sold this saw brand new,and it's only been worked on by me   ;) lucky it aint been out around the horn of "expert's" out there locally.

the first problem with this saw back a few years ago,was the automatic decompression valve failed.so removed it and put a new manual one in it and capped the impulse line.(witch is a **** to do while leaving the cylinder on the saw) out the door goes happy customer.

today in walks the customer, wanting his "tune-up". i take out brand new spark plug with maybe 1 minute run time. lay it on the work bench and pick-up my little lite and look in thru the spark plug hole to the exhaust port to see the "seizure marks". i say's "it's dead" telling him it's been seized up.he say's NO....it still turns over good!!! (all customers say that) but i can't get'er goin'  >:( (that too all the time)

i tell him my story of how seizure goes,he listen's...& buy's new 562XP   ;D

clean saws that customers bring you thinking they are helping you.....ARE DEAD WRONG
I KNOW HOW TO GET A SAW "READY"...for dis-assembly,they think they do  :-X
dirt can be your friend....& it will be your enemy if you don't keep track of it.

here you can see leaky intake boot that i removed off cylinder just by pulling on it,with the clamp still hooked up & dirty...it leaks because of bad clamp

here you can see cut  on block-off cap caused by "yanking" on saw while pinched in limb or log

here are the tell-tale signs of "operator". not possible with "clean saw"

next is new piston, cap & intake clamp. (unless i find more)  back to the repair, more later.

back with the results.
here's what i use to clean up cylinder.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO97LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO97LargeWebview.jpg)
it works best for me when i put the cylinder on my hot woodstove to get it "ready"!!!!....(watch out for the fumes from acid) they will take your breath away
this is how i "hone" the cylinder...don't rub thru the edges of port(s)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO98LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO98LargeWebview.jpg)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO99LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO99LargeWebview.jpg)
carefully remove stuck piston ring from groove as shown, don't break it.
i have done this to hundreds of saws and just put on a new ring and used the old piston over again.but not on this saw.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO106LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO106LargeWebview.jpg)
use the old piston to push the old ring up to the top of the cylinder to check the end gap of ring and maybe expose worn cylinder.this cylinder not worn!  ;D
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO107LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO107LargeWebview.jpg)
i like to place the pin clips like this on both sides of piston
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO108LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO108LargeWebview.jpg)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO109LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO109LargeWebview.jpg)
modify the stock intake manifold as shown,by cutting of factory clamp that don't work.and use air fiter clamp for HD 372xp air filter.
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO103LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO103LargeWebview.jpg)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO104LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO104LargeWebview.jpg)
the impulse hose was found to be ready to leak,so i changed it.(it rubbed the plastic intake wall, but not all the way thru)
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO105LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO105LargeWebview.jpg)
here's the service bulletin.notice the pictured nipple, and the nipple on this saw  :P
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO101LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO101LargeWebview.jpg)
i turned the nipple and pointed it "up" and out of the way,now that i have cylinder "off" this time.not like first time.
now operator can yank all he want's while he is pinched, and no more cut nipple cap!
(http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO100LargeWebview.jpg) (http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o8/WILLIAMFGREENE/INTERNETPOSTPICNO100LargeWebview.jpg)
i'll bet that the local "expert's" around here would wonder.....how'd he tighten that screw???...when they look at it   :D

AND....i forgot to tell ya,that i did this for the customer for $100.00.because he is loyal to me.don't go ANYWHERE ELSE.and listens to me!
i don't have many guys like him. he asked me how much to repair??before buying 562,and i told him $150.00.
i turned both jets back out to factory settings.left jet caps on-since i know he did'nt touch them.i'm willing to bet, that his new "spare saw" will easily get at least another 8+ years use.the way he uses it!

this post i just made is the first tear down with pics that i have ever done. hope to make more.

Neat to see your ways of doing things and you said you used a HD 372 air filter clamp. I havent heard of that one being used before.  8)

Thanks for sharing this info here.

I actually started glueing the intake boots to the cylinders, not trusting even the metal clamp to hold.

3m makes a spray glue 08090 or use Krazy Glue or Super Glue glue the boot to the face and let it set and dry then add clamp as final measure.

I have seen when applying the metal clamp on eht 350 and 357s that the boot wants to slide off as the clamp is tightened that is why I started glueing plus it really seals the boot.

Some red Loctite on the clamps screw prevents the clamp from loosening off.
