Title: Ignition Problems?
Post by: riverrocket on March 21, 2013, 06:21:04 am
I’ve been working on a 034 that I’m having troubles with, IT starts and idles great, but when revving it up it cuts in and out. It’s like an 026 when the kill switch gets bumped off when your cutting and the saw doesn’t shut off, but starts cutting out and you figure out what happened and push the switch back down.
It’s hard to explain, it cuts out like it’s an electrical short, and it starts to rev up just fine but than just cuts in and out. It does it in and out of the cut; I can’t see any obvious bare wires or shorts`
I rebuilt the carb and no change. Could it be the coil?
How would the saw run if the air gap on the coil is too wide or to close?
Thanks for any help with this one.

Clean the kill switch good with some electrical contact cleaner and you might want to check your crank seals. I just had to replace them in one of my Husqvarna saws. It had sorta the same symptoms you described. It would start and idle for short periods then die. If you tried to rev it up it would sound like it was missing (lean hits) and kick back in your hands. I found it was my clutch side crank seal leaking.
A set of new seals and it runs great again.
Good luck

I' m not certain exactly what type of coil that saw uses .I did however have an 042 which has a self advancing coil give me fits .Sometimes it would advance some then evidently retard and it ran lousey .I substituted the similar coil from an 048 to diagnose the problem and later replaced the coil and it's ran fine since .

I figured it out today ;D I screwed the ignition wire out of the coil and sure enough the isolation on the wire was rubbed thru just above the coil and was sorting out.
I took another plug wire out of a spare coil I had and the saw works like it should again.
So i ordered a new Plug wire. Does anyone know how important it is to make sure the new wire is the correct length?
Would the length of the wire affect the timing at all? thanks

The length of the wire does not effect the timing.

Most of the chainsaw plug wires are 5mm which is a lot smaller than automotive applications.
