I've been noticing several of the plastic covers for the poulan 415 425 445 475 505 have some weird wear patterns I havent seen on other plastic covers.
Here is 2 with the wear and 1 not showing the wear.
I have my thoughts on whats causing this, but want to see what others think.
Also notice the different shades of yellows.

I see the wear across the metal inserts for the bar studs and that the middle one for the 505 has none. I have no idea what causes that. Tell me what do you think it is.
There is quite a difference in color also like you mentioned.
-
I was there in the shop looking at them last week and other than that the worn ones apparently had a lot of use, I have no explanation?
Maybe they were over tightened?
-
They are suppose to be run with a outer metal bar plate attached to cover. I am thinking the ones with the wear were not run with the plate. Also when I received them there wasnt any on them.
The one with no wear, I would bet was run with the outer plate attached. Just my thinking on this.
I also cross referenced the part number for outer plate to early husky part number.

I can verify that the one cover in the middle had a bar plate on it.

I was hoping you knew.
Here is the outer cover bar plates. I'm not sure on all the husqvarnas that used this plate but here is my guesses. husky 266 61 268 2100 272 66 part # 501444501
I am thinking of the ones with the wear. Grinding them down flat again and use outer bar plates. Should work wouldnt you think?
-
Sure why not.
-
i'd grind them down. the damage happens due to people not cleaning the surfaces while putting the bar back on or when they loosen it up to retighten the chain. crud gets in there and gives you a false tightening. once you start the saw and start cutting, the dirt falls out, leaving you with a slightly loose bar. most homeowners complain of the chain being tight, but it loosens off when they start cutting. and this confuses them. so they just gorilla arm them tighter to the point the bar starts cutting into the sides (or worse). the bar will do this also when it's just loose enough to move around a bit aswell, like on the tooless side covers.
i agree on adding the metal plae to the side cover. i have no idea why it wouldn't be common practice on a plastic side cover. don't know their thinking other than that huge extra cost of adding it :) and the idea that these saws were only meant to last a couple few years before the clutch cover would ever need replacing or cleaning up.

I ran across 501-4444-01 Inner 501-4445-01 Outer in IPL used on D007 Poulan bars. Don't remember where I ran across it. Agree it should work fine.
I put em on all my 266,268,272,61 Huskys. Don't have any big Poulans Yet. ;D

This is most common reason I think. I find some now and then on other saws too that are the same. Older Jonsereds had this problem too.
Another reason can be vibrations. See that too sometimes.

All IPL's I have looked at show both coming on the saws. http://www.poulanpro.com/ddoc/POUI/POUI1994_USen/POUI1994_USen__530067868.pdf
I think people discarded them at some time or another IMO. I know I have have tossed them on metal clutch covers before.

Just got home from Wyoming today. I went out and looked at my Poulan 505 and the inner plate is just a flat plate and the outer plate which is there, is the curved plate at the ends to avoid the chain. So looks to me like the 505 comes with two bar plates.
-
Eventually you will be saying back home in Wyoming?
Been there and done that a few times.
-
Yes you are correct. I am pretty anxious about getting moved up there, but I have alot to do to sell my house first. Like the saying goes all in good time.
-
The plate is there for several reasons. It needs to be there and are in most saws that are useble.
-
Most of my chainsaws were obtained used and only a couple almost new ones had a outer chain plate.
i have more of the Husky 372 family series chainsaws than anything which never had a outer chain plate but the others had no outer chain plate by the time I got them.
I get a strong feeling that most people ignore the chain until it jumps off - tears everything up, and then they curse it . . . .
At this point, they remove the damaged outer chain plate and never replace it.
-
When putting the topend on the #1 505 yesterday I noticed that one had a outer plate. It wasnt the style shown in IPL or feebay pic with hole in cetner for screw to hold onto clutch cover. Just slides on after bar and then clutch cover.
If it is oem I can see how they could have come up missing over the years.

Interesting thread.

The metal jonsered clutch cover. Shame poulan partner didnt do this IMO. Partner may have, I dont know. Only seen the ones in the partner board.

Not a shame as I thought back then. Poulan did have metal clutch covers for these. I have seen 1 to date. http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/poulan/poulan-metal-yellow-clutch-cover-445-425-505-415-475/

Ahh, good info. I'm going to be fabricating outer bar plates for all the plastic clutch covers that don't have them, which is pretty much all my Poulans. I'm hoping to reduce both mechanical and thermal stress on the cover, and to improve the seal for better oiling.
Meh, stuck this in the wrong thread!

@3000 FPS I bought 2 NOS yellow clutch covers today. I bought both thinking you still need one for your 505? They were pricey shipped but figured NLA.

Yes I would be interested in one of those. I have been fighting the flu this week so have been slow to respond. Give me a little time and I will send you a PM.
-
Fought that sucker for 3 weeks myself. Wife still fighting it.
-
When I seen the pic of these NOS poulan pro clutch covers I said to myself. These are going to be the metal ones. I had only seen the front side not the back. But if you look at the difference of the bar stud area you can see the difference in these and the plastic normal covers we see.
Pic I seen 1st.
-
Wow those are very nice and pretty scarce from what I have seen. Nice find.

Roger I will have another surprise if I guessed right on the next NOS parts. Info in PM. ;)
