My old 1997 model 51 has suffered a little bad fuel mishap, I think I may have got too much ethanol in my gas, yea, this left coast gas sucks, I considered fixing it up but its age, needs new bar & chain, now a new piston & cylinder, so am considering a new 455 instead, after reading a few bad reviews I'm wondering if there is a way to know the date of manufacture like my old one which was stamped on the serial plate, or if it even makes a difference when the saw was made?, and btw, I now have two non-functioning model 51's available to someone who likes to fix them.

I read that TSC had the 455 clearanced at $199 to make room for the jonsered line now.
Otherwise 455 about $395 TYD with 20" 353 can be had for same price with 16"

Thanks, My old husky 51 has served me well and have no reason to change brands, the 455 seems to be about equal in capability, now approaching 80 years in age I cant handle much bigger but need the 20" bar for these big Monterey pine trees I use for firewood, in reading some of the posts about the old saws-I worked a lot of years in the PNW & N. CA in the redwoods, those old two man saws we had then were real man killers compared to the pro saws of today, when Homelite hit the woods with the first belt drive saws they made in the early fifties they were game changers, fellers tossed those old Mac's, Mall's and Titans in the back of their trucks and forgot them, one tidbit I remember was the old Stihls were affectionately known as "Hitlers", those were made pre-WW2, used saws was all a person could find until after that.

I would recommend the 353 it's lighter than the 455. Handling is a LOT better too.

The date mfg is in the SN: XX XXXXXX. Should be stamped with year on the ID tag on saws after 1999 IIRC . It doesn't matter what year it was made if it is new. On your 51's the first number in the SN is year mfg.

I would recommend the 353 it's lighter than the 455. Handling is a LOT better too.

I was wondering why he didnt go that way when I showed the 353 was same price with pro construction saw at that.

Well, I shopped around and couldn't find that 353 pro model, the size class that is in has several configurations but all at a price higher than the 455, one thing I couldn't find was the crankcase construction material, are they all plastic now? But first I broke down my old engine and checked for replacement parts, prices all over the map from around $50 for Hong Kong parts to about $200. for OEM, figuring total cost to bring mine back to "like new" condition didn't make a lot of sense, so ordered a new 455 on ebay, on the plus side it has 3/8ths chain (I still have a new one from my old Pioneer 3071) from years back, So, finally, I have to thank you folks for putting up with some stupid questions without choking your chew. I hope I like my new plastic tinker toy.
