Title: 2159 carb linkage question.
Post by: Vance in AK on September 25, 2013, 09:33:35 pm
There is a slight glitch in the throttle linkage.  once the trigger is fully depressed if I lift the palm of my hand off the trigger safety I gain a bit more throttle.  Somehow the safety is blocking it.  I can then regrip the safety & the throttle still stays "wide open".
BUT, there is another issue.  When the throttle is "wide open (saw NOT running, air filter removed for visibility) I can reach down to the arm on the carb butterfly & move it another 1/8" in the open direction.  I assume this is a linkage problem & should NOT be this way?  should I see if I can bend the linkage to get true full throttle?  I do not have a tach before anyone asks (nor a local dealer).

I had the same trouble and I stretched my linkage a little so the carb would go all the way open.

Few things can cause this to happen.

Someone might have installed the slightly shorter 2153/346 link.

Rear mount could be loose or distorted or the top handle could be bent changing the overall distance.

The plastic piece on the end of the link can be loose which can change dimensions a bit.

Thanks guys.
Spike, it's basically a "new" saw that I bought used from an individual.   Nothing appears  on the mounts or handle.  I assume the plastic piece on the linkage you are referring to is in the rear handle?  There is none at the carb.  Is there a way to get into the rear handles?  Could be an improper likkage part from the factory too I guess.  I will check all the mounts today.

I have a 357 and it is of the same family as the 359.  The throttle linkage has always been touchy on my 357. I replaced the linkage once but it didn't help much.

One thing I did notice was that to examine the throttle action with the saw not running, the throttle arm on the carb would not open completely.

But running, the vibration must help it work for the throttle opens completely

I will run it today with the top cover off for a minute & see if it opens all the way while running.  I think I will try & bend it a touch so it goes to full (or very near) as a mechanical positive, not counting on vibration.  When you really dog it in doing a top cut it will pick up RPM because the rear handle is "lifting" (thru the anti-vibe) & moving the linkage forward.  That's why it's bogging on me when I cut from the bottom of a log.  The opposite happens.

Vance,
You may have a tear in one of the rear vibration cushions?  Be careful moving the tank away from the case too far, you will tear the intake boot.
